During development of our high horsepower turbos kits for the 997TT, we experienced excessively high intake air temperatures. Upon close examination of the stock intercoolers, we found they matched the same specs as the 996TT X50/GT2 design, which is suitable to 600hp, but not much beyond that.
Since an OEM option was not available, and our power goals were well north of 700hp, we undertook the task to construct a completely new intercooler system. As with all our intercoolers, a cast end tank was designed in house using sophisticated CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software. Once the end tanks were cast by the foundry, they were then machined on our CNC mill, welded to specially designed cores, and then power tested and refined on our chassis dynamometer.
Compared to stock, our cores are 37% larger (422 cubic inches vs 308 cubic inches). In contrast to the stock cores, ours are a high flow bar and plate style and are built to our charge row and fin count specs. These specifications resulted in improved intake temperatures by a massive 55F and improved drop pressure resistance through the core by 1 psi. Considering that extremely little trimming is involved to fit such effective units to the car, this is a huge engineering feat.
In addition to the superior core and end tank design, our kit also features 6-ply silicone hoses with gentle curves to prevent bursting under pressure. They are attached to the intake and turbos by stainless steel high force t-bolt clamps, and a molded lip is integrated where the hoses meet the turbos to imitate the factory locking mechanism. Further, our hoses use a Nomex braiding for superior strength, instead of more common polyester. The very best materials and industry-leading engineering separate this kit from all others on the market.
Whether you are simply running enhanced software, or are planning on a larger turbo upgrade for your car, our intercoolers solve all heat-related issues that come with more turbo boost. Keeping your intake air temperatures low results in more power, better engine output stability when outside temps climb, and the safety margin needed when pushing the limit.
Please Note: the AWE Tuning Performance Intercooler is for racing use only.
The Dyno sheet above was collected on our Mustang MD-AWD-500-SE AWD dynamometer, on the street, and on various race tracks. Several runs were made recording wheel power for both the stock and AWE Tuning intercooler assemblies and then averaged, with graphs of the changes shown below. All tests were done on our in house 2007 997TT with a prototype 700S turbo kit installed. 93 octane fuel was used for all tests.
Below: Power test of our intercooler design vs stock. Installing our intercooler system reduced heat tremendously, to produce a cooler, denser intake air charge, resulting in a very nice increase in power at high rpms (nearly 16 crank horsepower at peak when converting from the dyno sheet wheel power measurement). Even more impressive was the additional low end power released by reducing the pressure drop through the cores.

AWE Tuning is an American performance brand that has spent decades engineering exhaust systems, intakes, and intercoolers specifically for European-platform vehicles. Based in Pennsylvania, AWE develops every product in-house with a focus on sound engineering, dyno-proven power gains, and fitment that installs cleanly the first time.Popular UpgradesAWE exhaust systems are among the most recognized in the Audi and VW community, covering everything from cat-back systems on the Golf R and GTI to full turbo-back setups on the Audi S3, S4, and RS3. Intake systems reduce restriction and improve throttle response, while intercoolers drop charge temperatures for consistent power under sustained boost. AWE also offers a Touring Edition exhaust for drivers who want improved sound without the full race note on daily-driven cars. What platforms does AWE Tuning support?AWE primarily focuses on Audi, Volkswagen, BMW, and Porsche platforms. Popular applications include the MQB-platform GTI and Golf...

Forced induction systems encompass every method of pushing air into an engine at greater than atmospheric pressure, including turbochargers driven by exhaust energy, superchargers driven mechanically by the crankshaft, and prochargers using centrifugal designs belt-driven at higher ratios than traditional roots-type blowers, with each approach delivering a significant increase in air mass per cylinder fill that allows proportionally more fuel to be burned and more power to be produced without increasing engine displacement. Adding 10 PSI of boost pressure to a naturally aspirated engine can increase power output by 50 to 70 percent depending on the engine's breathing efficiency and the quality of the supporting hardware, making forced induction the most power-dense modification available relative to cost and complexity. This collection covers complete forced induction systems, turbocharger and supercharger hardware, intercoolers, blow-off valves, wastegates, and supporting component...

Intercooler components let you build, upgrade, or repair your charge cooling system without replacing the entire intercooler assembly. Quality piping, silicone couplers, mounting brackets, and core upgrades make a meaningful difference in keeping intake temperatures low on high-boost builds and daily-driven turbocharged vehicles alike. Popular Upgrades Frequently ordered intercooler components include upgraded silicone coupler hose kits to replace cracked or blow-off-prone rubber hoses, intercooler core upgrades for higher bar-and-plate or tube-and-fin density, aluminum intercooler piping sets that replace restrictive OEM plastic pipes, and universal mounting brackets for custom intercooler positioning on fabricated builds. What causes intercooler components to fail? The most common intercooler component failure points are silicone or rubber couplers that crack or split under repeated heat cycling, plastic OEM piping that becomes brittle over time, and mounting brackets that fatigue...

An intercooler is the single most important component in a turbocharged induction system for supporting power gains from higher boost. By cooling compressed air before it enters the engine, an upgraded intercooler delivers denser, cooler charge air that allows more fuel to be safely injected and combusted, directly translating to more horsepower and torque. Popular Upgrades Best-selling intercooler upgrades include front-mount bar-and-plate aluminum intercoolers for Subaru WRX and STI, Mitsubishi Evo, and Volkswagen GTI platforms, direct-fit top-mount intercooler upgrades for rotary and compact turbo applications, and heavy-duty intercooler upgrades for Ford Powerstroke and Dodge Cummins diesel trucks where factory coolers are prone to failure under load. What is the difference between bar-and-plate and tube-and-fin intercoolers? Bar-and-plate intercoolers use a stacked aluminum plate construction that is more durable and provides superior cooling efficiency but adds more weight. Tu...
