About Bilstein

Bilstein has been manufacturing precision suspension components since 1954, pioneering the monotube gas pressure shock absorber technology still used in their B4, B6, and B8 performance lines. Their B8 control arms and B1 service components are engineered and tested in Germany to OEM-grade tolerances, making them a preferred choice for lifted truck and SUV applications where suspension geometry correction and durability are critical.

FAQ

What is the Bilstein 13-100131?

The Bilstein 13-100131 is a B1 series replacement ball joint kit designed to service compatible Bilstein B8 upper control arms. It includes the ball joint, boot, zerk fitting, snap ring, castle nut, and cotter pin needed for a complete ball joint replacement without swapping the full arm.

What control arms is the 13-100131 compatible with?

The 13-100131 is designed for use with specific Bilstein B8 upper control arm applications. Confirm the correct kit number for your specific B8 control arm part number before ordering, as different B8 arm applications use different replacement kits.

Can the Bilstein 13-100131 be used on the factory OEM control arms of my truck?

No. The 13-100131 is a service kit specifically for Bilstein B8 aftermarket upper control arms. It is not a universal chassis ball joint for stock OEM control arms. Using it outside the Bilstein B8 ecosystem is not supported.

Does the 13-100131 include a grease fitting?

Yes. The kit includes a zerk grease fitting for periodic lubrication, helping extend ball joint life on compatible B8 arms that support greasing.

Should I get an alignment after installing the Bilstein 13-100131?

Yes. Any time control arm or ball joint work is performed, a professional alignment should be completed afterward to ensure proper suspension geometry, tire wear, and handling characteristics.

What tools are needed to install the Bilstein 13-100131 ball joint kit?

You will need a ball joint press or press kit, basic hand tools for the castle nut and cotter pin, snap ring pliers, and a torque wrench. A brake hang hook or bungee is useful for supporting the caliper and knuckle assembly during the process.

How long does the Bilstein B1 ball joint last in an off-road application?

Service life varies based on use, driving terrain, and whether the joint is kept properly greased. In mild daily driving conditions the joint can last as long as the original equipment. In heavy off-road or repeated hard use, inspect the boot and joint for wear every 12 months or 15,000 miles.

What warranty covers the Bilstein 13-100131?

Warranty coverage follows Bilstein's standard terms for the B1 component series. Coverage typically excludes misuse, improper installation, or use outside compatible B8 control arm applications. Retain your proof of purchase for any warranty claims.

Installation Instructions

  1. Lift and safely support the vehicle; remove the wheel from the affected corner.
  2. Loosen and remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the existing ball joint stud.
  3. Use a ball joint separator or press to separate the ball joint from the knuckle.
  4. Remove the snap ring securing the ball joint in the control arm housing.
  5. Press the old ball joint out of the B8 control arm using a ball joint press.
  6. Press the new Bilstein 13-100131 ball joint into the control arm until fully seated.
  7. Install the snap ring to secure the new joint in place.
  8. Insert the ball joint stud into the knuckle and torque the castle nut to Bilstein specification.
  9. Install a new cotter pin through the castle nut and stud; bend to secure.
  10. Install the zerk fitting and apply grease until you see grease emerge around the boot edge.
  11. Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts to specification.
  12. Schedule a professional alignment before returning to normal driving.
