Stop Rear Control Arm Wander on an FJ80 Land Cruiser with Polyurethane That Outlasts the Factory Rubber by a Wide Margin

The Energy Suspension 8.3138G is the Hyper-Flex polyurethane rear control arm bushing set for the 1991-1997 Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series in black. As FJ80 Land Cruisers age, the factory rear control arm bushings deteriorate from heat, ozone, and the heavy unsprung weight cycles of a 5,000-pound truck-based SUV, resulting in rear-end wander, imprecise steering, uneven tire wear, and loose handling characteristics. The ENG8.3138G replaces the factory rubber with Energy Suspension's Hyper-Flex polyurethane compound, which is dimensionally stable under sustained load, resists heat and ozone degradation, and maintains precise arm geometry through the suspension travel cycle. The 8.3138 set covers the rear lower inner and outer bushings, rear upper inner and outer bushings, and the required metal sleeves for a complete rear control arm bushing renewal on the 1991-1997 Land Cruiser 80 Series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Energy Suspension 8.3138G?

The Energy Suspension 8.3138G is the Hyper-Flex polyurethane rear control arm bushing set for the 1991-1997 Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series (FJ80) in black. It includes rear lower inner and outer bushings, rear upper inner and outer bushings, and all required metal sleeves for a complete rear control arm bushing renewal. The set uses Energy Suspension's full-floating polyurethane design to prevent binding and maintain precise rear suspension geometry.

What years of Land Cruiser does the 8.3138G fit?

The Energy Suspension 8.3138G is specifically designed for the 1991-1997 Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series, also referred to as the FJ80 and FZJ80. It does not cover the 100 Series Land Cruiser (1998 and later) or the 60 Series. Confirm your specific year and series before ordering.

How many bushings are in the ENG8.3138G set?

The 8.3138G set includes 4 rear lower inner bushings, 8 rear lower outer bushings, 4 rear upper inner bushings, 8 rear upper outer bushings, and 8 metal sleeves sized 1.125 inch x 0.710 inch x 2.340 inch. This covers both rear corners of the 1991-1997 Land Cruiser 80 Series rear control arm assembly.

What are the symptoms of worn rear control arm bushings on the FJ80?

On high-mileage FJ80 Land Cruisers, common symptoms of worn rear control arm bushings include rear-end wander at highway speeds, imprecise steering feel, clunking or knocking from the rear suspension over bumps, uneven rear tire wear, and visible movement of the rear axle housing during acceleration or braking. Inspecting the bushings with the vehicle on a lift and applying load to the suspension to reveal movement is the definitive diagnostic approach.

Does the 8.3138G require pressing for installation?

Yes. Rear control arm bushings on the Land Cruiser 80 Series are pressed into the control arm housing. Removal and installation require a hydraulic press, a bushing press tool set, or a bolt-and-socket improvised press for shops with the correct hardware. This is not a hand-tool installation. Most FJ80 owners take the control arms to a machine shop or suspension specialist for pressing.

Does the ENG8.3138G require lubrication?

Energy Suspension recommends applying a polyurethane-safe grease to the bushing contact surfaces and pivot sleeves during installation to allow proper movement and prevent squeaking. Do not use petroleum-based grease, which degrades polyurethane. Use Energy Suspension's supplied grease or an equivalent white lithium or silicone-based product compatible with polyurethane bushings.

Is there a red version of the 8.3138 available?

Yes. The Energy Suspension 8.3138R is the same rear control arm bushing set in red. The polyurethane compound, construction, included components, and fitment are identical between the 8.3138G (black) and 8.3138R (red). Color is the only difference.

Will the ENG8.3138G improve handling and on-road precision on my FJ80?

Yes. Replacing deteriorated factory rubber with fresh Hyper-Flex polyurethane restores the original rear suspension geometry and eliminates the slop that develops in worn rubber bushings. The improvement in rear-end tracking precision and steering response is typically noticeable immediately on a high-mileage FJ80 that has never had the rear control arm bushings replaced. The polyurethane will also maintain that precision longer than rubber replacement bushings.

Installation Instructions

  1. Lift and safely support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Support the rear axle housing on a floor jack to relieve load from the rear control arms.
  3. Mark each control arm and its mounting orientation before removal for correct reinstallation.
  4. Remove the rear control arm mounting bolts at both the axle and the frame, and carefully extract each control arm from the vehicle.
  5. Using a hydraulic press and appropriate mandrels, press out the factory rubber bushings from each control arm housing. Clean the housing bores thoroughly.
  6. Apply Energy Suspension polyurethane-safe grease to the outside of the new 8.3138G bushing shells before pressing in.
  7. Press the new Hyper-Flex bushings into the control arm housing using the correct size mandrel to avoid damage to the polyurethane.
  8. Install the metal sleeves into the center of the pressed-in bushings.
  9. Apply polyurethane-safe grease to the inner sleeve contact surfaces.
  10. Reinstall the control arms onto the vehicle at the original orientation. Install mounting bolts hand-tight.
  11. With the vehicle at ride height (load the suspension with the vehicle weight before final torque), torque all control arm mounting bolts to factory specification.
  12. Reinstall wheels, lower the vehicle, and perform a rear wheel alignment before driving.
