What do the 3 adjustment holes on the H&R 71426 do?The three end link mounting holes change the leverage point of the sway bar, increasing or decreasing rear roll stiffness. Using the inner hole gives the softest setting, the outer hole the firmest. The middle position is a balanced street and track setting for most BMW M5 E60 applications.
Does the HRS71426 require new rear end links on the BMW M5 E60?The 71426 is designed to use the factory OEM rear end links. New end links are not required unless the originals are worn or damaged.
Can I install the H&R 71426 without also upgrading the front sway bar?Yes. The HRS71426 rear bar can be installed independently. However, for the best handling balance, it pairs with the H&R 70426 30mm non-adjustable front sway bar for a complete front and rear E60 M5 upgrade (also available separately as a kit, H&R part number 72426).
Will the H&R 71426 cause oversteer on the BMW M5 E60?Increasing rear sway bar stiffness alone can reduce understeer and increase turn-in response, but in excess can promote oversteer. The three adjustment positions allow you to find the right balance. Start at the middle hole and adjust based on how the car handles in practice.
Do the Teflon-lined bushings on the 71426 squeak?No. H&R's Teflon-lined polyurethane bushings are permanently lubricated and do not require grease or re-lubrication, which eliminates the squeaking common with standard polyurethane bushings on sway bars.
Does the H&R 71426 rear sway bar change ride height on the E60 M5?No. The 71426 is a direct replacement for the factory rear sway bar. It does not alter ride height in any way.
Is the H&R 71426 legal for street use?Yes. Sway bar replacements do not require emissions or safety certification in the USA and are legal for street use.
What tools are needed to install the H&R 71426 on a BMW M5 E60?Installation typically requires a floor jack, jack stands, metric sockets, a torque wrench, and a Torx set. A bushing press or rubber mallet helps seat the polyurethane mounting bushings into the mounting brackets.
Installation Instructions
- Safely raise the vehicle and support on jack stands at the rear jacking points.
- Remove the rear wheels for better access to the rear suspension and sway bar mounting locations.
- Disconnect the factory rear sway bar end links from both sides of the sway bar.
- Remove the rear sway bar mounting bracket hardware and lower the factory rear sway bar.
- Install the Teflon-lined polyurethane bushings onto the H&R 71426 sway bar at the factory mounting positions.
- Position the H&R 71426 into the rear mounting location and install the brackets.
- Select the desired end link mounting hole on each end of the sway bar. Connect the factory end links.
- Torque all fasteners to factory specification.
- Reinstall the rear wheels and lower the vehicle.
- Test drive and verify no noise from the rear sway bar area before returning to normal use.
