Bring Back Factory Composure to a Focus ST That's Lost Its Edge

Worn rear shocks on a hard driven Focus ST let the rear end bounce and wallow through corners instead of staying settled, robbing the car of the sharp handling it had when new. The KYB 3440047 Excel-G rear shock is built on the same OE assembly lines KYB uses for original equipment, using a nitrogen gas charged twin tube design with a triple plated chrome piston rod for smooth, consistent damping. It's calibrated to match the Focus ST's original engineering rather than to soften or stiffen the ride, so you get factory feel back without changing how the car was designed to drive.

Key Features

  • Nitrogen gas charged twin tube design for consistent damping control
  • Triple plated chrome piston rod resists wear over the life of the shock
  • Calibrated to restore the Focus ST's original equipment ride and handling
  • Built on the same OE assembly lines KYB uses for factory production
  • Direct bolt-in replacement using factory mounting points
  • Sold individually for single shock replacement or paired service

    FAQ

What is the KYB 3440047 shock?

It's a rear Excel-G shock absorber built by KYB as a direct fit replacement for the 2013 through 2016 Ford Focus ST, using the same nitrogen gas charged twin tube design and OE quality components found in KYB's original equipment production.

Is this shock sold as a single unit or a pair?

The 3440047 is sold individually, so two are needed to replace both rear shocks on the vehicle.

Should I replace both rear shocks at the same time?

Replacing both rear shocks together is generally recommended so damping feels even side to side, especially if the shocks are original and have significant mileage.

Will this shock work with a lowering spring or coilover setup?

This shock is calibrated to match the factory Focus ST suspension geometry and stroke length, so it's intended for use with factory or factory-height replacement springs rather than aggressively lowered setups.

Does installing this shock require an alignment afterward?

A basic alignment check is a good practice after any rear suspension work, though a direct shock swap at stock ride height typically has minimal effect on alignment angles.

What tools are needed to install this shock?

Basic hand tools, a way to safely support the vehicle, and typically a spring compressor if the strut assembly needs to be disassembled are sufficient for most installations.

Does this shock come with a warning label?

Yes, this product includes a California Proposition 65 warning regarding chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm, which is standard for many automotive components sold in the United States.

How long should a KYB Excel-G shock last?

KYB Excel-G shocks are commonly reported to perform well well past 100,000 miles under normal driving conditions, consistent with their OE-grade construction.

    Install Instructions

    1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle on jack stands
    2. Remove the wheel and locate the upper and lower shock mounting points
    3. Disconnect the worn shock from its upper and lower mounts and remove it
    4. Position the KYB 3440047 shock into the lower mount first, then the upper mount
    5. Install and torque all mounting hardware to factory specification
    6. Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and repeat on the opposite side if replacing both shocks

    Suspension

Aftermarket suspension systems improve handling, ride quality, and ride height adjustment beyond what the factory suspension provides. From lowering springs and coilover kits for sport handling to lift kits and leveling kits for truck and SUV off-road capability, quality suspension components transform how a vehicle rides and handles. Popular Suspension Upgrades Popular suspension upgrades include coilover kits for adjustable ride height and damping, sport lowering springs for improved handling and reduced body roll, performance shock absorbers and strut assemblies, sway bar and end link upgrade kits, subframe brace kits, and complete suspension packages for lifted trucks and off-road SUVs. Alignment kits including camber bolts and camber arms are also frequently ordered after ride height changes. What is the difference between coilovers and lowering springs? Coilovers are complete shock and spring assemblies with adjustable ride height set by threading the spring perch on the shock...
