What makes this kit different from a standard replacement brake job?The pad compound and the drilled and slotted rotor face are chosen for sustained heat, which is what happens on a loaded truck or a long descent rather than in normal traffic.
Are the calipers new or rebuilt?Each caliper is supplied ready to fit and is pressure tested before it leaves the factory to check for leaks.
Does the kit cover the rear brakes too?No. This is a front axle kit. A separate rear kit is needed to do the whole truck.
Is any hardware missing from the box?The kit ships with stainless steel hardware, shims and high temperature lubricant, so nothing extra is normally required.
Will the calipers clear the factory wheels?The kit is sized around the original wheel package. Any non standard wheel should be checked for caliper clearance before installation.
Why are the rotors plated?The zinc plating slows surface rust on the areas the pads never touch, such as the vanes, hub face and outer edge, which matters on a truck that sits or sees winter roads.
Do the pads need a bedding procedure?Yes. A bedding sequence of progressively firmer stops transfers an even layer of friction material onto the new rotor face and should be completed before towing.
Will the drilled holes cause the rotors to crack?The holes are cast and chamfered rather than drilled through a finished face, which is what keeps stress from concentrating at the hole edge under heat.
Does anything need checking after installation?The brake system must be bled if any line was opened, the pedal checked for firmness, and all caliper and bracket fasteners re torqued after the first short drive.
Installation Instructions
- Raise the front of the truck, support it on stands and remove both front wheels.
- Unbolt the caliper from its bracket and support it so no load is placed on the brake hose.
- Disconnect the brake hose at the caliper and catch the fluid, then remove the old caliper.
- Remove the caliper bracket and slide the original rotor off the hub, cleaning any rust from the hub face.
- Fit the new rotor, refit the bracket and torque the bracket bolts to the vehicle manufacturer figures.
- Install the new pads with the supplied stainless shims and apply the high temperature lubricant only to the contact points named in the instructions.
- Mount the new caliper, connect the brake hose with fresh sealing washers and torque the fittings.
- Repeat on the opposite side, then bleed the front circuit with fresh fluid until the pedal is firm.
- Bed the pads with a series of progressively firmer stops from moderate speed, allowing cooling between them, before any towing.
