Rear Drum Brake Shoes Built for the 2001-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ and Unlimited
The PowerStop SSH769 Autospecialty brake shoes are a direct OE replacement for the rear 9-inch drum brake system on 2001-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ and TJ Unlimited models. SSH769 shoes are precision cam ground to match the drum arc for full contact across the entire friction surface, post cured to shorten break-in time and deliver stronger initial stopping force right out of the box, and chamfered on both ends to eliminate the squeal and chatter that commonly develops in drum setups. A complete hardware kit is included with every set so you have everything needed to complete a full rear brake service without a separate hardware purchase. All friction materials are 100% asbestos-free and copper-free.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Jeep Wrangler models does the PowerStop SSH769 fit?The SSH769 fits 2001-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ and TJ Unlimited (LJ) models equipped with the 9-inch rear drum brake system. This includes Sport, Sahara, Rubicon, and X trim levels from those model years that use the standard 9-inch rear drum configuration.
What drum size do the SSH769 shoes fit on the Jeep Wrangler TJ?The SSH769 is designed for the 9-inch (228.6 mm) diameter rear drum with a 2.5-inch (63.5 mm) shoe width. This is the standard rear drum configuration on 2001-2006 Wrangler TJ models after the March 2000 production cutover. Earlier TJ models and YJ models with 9-inch drums use a different shoe part number.
Does the SSH769 come with the hardware kit for a complete brake job?Yes. PowerStop includes a complete hardware kit with the SSH769 covering return springs, hold-down springs, retainer pins, and the adjuster assembly. You will not need to source separate hardware to complete the rear drum brake service on your Wrangler.
Can the SSH769 handle off-road use and trail driving? The SSH769 Autospecialty shoes are designed and rated as OE-equivalent stock replacement parts. They are well-suited for standard trail use and off-road driving at typical recreational speeds. For extreme trail or competition use involving sustained heavy braking on steep grades, a higher-performance drum shoe compound may be more appropriate.
Do I need to resurface my Wrangler TJ rear drums before installing the SSH769?Inspect the drum surface before installation. If the inner braking surface shows deep scoring, grooves, or has been machined to near or beyond the discard diameter (typically 9.060 inches for the TJ), the drum should be resurfaced or replaced. Installing new shoes against a worn or scored drum surface leads to uneven break-in, noise, and accelerated wear of the new friction material.
Are the SSH769 shoes compatible with both the standard TJ Wrangler and the TJ Unlimited (LJ)?Yes. The SSH769 fits both the standard 2001-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ and the longer-wheelbase TJ Unlimited (LJ) models. Both share the same rear axle assembly and 9-inch drum brake specification, making the SSH769 a direct fitment for both variants.
What is the difference between bonded and riveted drum brake shoes for the Wrangler TJ?Bonded shoes like the SSH769 use high-pressure adhesive bonding to secure the friction lining to the steel backing plate, eliminating exposed rivet heads. Riveted shoes use metal fasteners that can score and gouge the drum surface if the friction lining wears down to the rivet level. Bonded construction also provides a cleaner contact surface and often allows the shoe to be used to a slightly lower minimum thickness before replacement.
How long should the SSH769 brake shoes last on a Jeep Wrangler used for both street and light off-road driving?Rear drum shoe service life on a Jeep Wrangler varies significantly based on driving mix and load. Street and light trail driving typically yields 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Regular towing, heavy trail use with sustained brake application on descents, or driving in wet and sandy conditions can shorten service intervals. Inspect shoes annually or at each tire rotation.
What is PowerStop's warranty on the SSH769?PowerStop covers the SSH769 under a limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Contact PowerStop customer support with your proof of purchase to initiate a warranty claim if a defect is found.
Installation Instructions
- Safely lift and support the Wrangler on jack stands at all four corners. Remove the rear wheels.
- Remove the rear brake drum. If the drum is seized to the hub, use a drum puller or strike the drum face gently with a rubber mallet while rotating. Inspect the drum braking surface for scoring and verify the inner diameter is within the discard spec (9.060 inches). Resurface or replace if necessary.
- Before disassembly, photograph the complete shoe, spring, and cable arrangement on one side as a reference for reassembly.
- Using brake spring pliers, remove the upper return spring, lower return spring, hold-down springs, and retainer pins. Disconnect the self-adjuster cable from the anchor pin and guide. Remove the shoes and adjuster assembly.
- Clean all backing plate contact ledges with brake cleaner. Apply a light coat of high-temperature brake grease to the six contact ledge points only. Keep grease off the drum surface and friction material.
- Install the new adjuster assembly and SSH769 shoes using the hardware provided in the kit. Seat hold-down pins first, then route the self-adjuster cable through the cable guide and attach return springs per your reference photograph.
- Expand the adjuster until the drum fits with light drag when rotated by hand. Back off 1 to 2 clicks for proper running clearance.
- Reinstall the drum and wheel. Torque lug nuts to 100 ft-lbs in a star pattern. Repeat on the opposite side before lowering the vehicle.
- Pump the brake pedal firmly until it is solid before moving the vehicle.
- Perform 8 to 10 moderate stops from 30 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between stops, to bed the friction material against the drum surface.
