Installation Instructions

1. Safely lift and support the Wrangler on jack stands at all four corners. Remove the rear wheels.
2. Remove the rear brake drum. If the drum is seized to the hub, use a drum puller or strike the drum face gently with a rubber mallet while rotating. Inspect the drum braking surface for scoring and verify the inner diameter is within the discard spec (9.060 inches). Resurface or replace if necessary.
3. Before disassembly, photograph the complete shoe, spring, and cable arrangement on one side as a reference for reassembly.
4. Using brake spring pliers, remove the upper return spring, lower return spring, hold-down springs, and retainer pins. Disconnect the self-adjuster cable from the anchor pin and guide. Remove the shoes and adjuster assembly.
5. Clean all backing plate contact ledges with brake cleaner. Apply a light coat of high-temperature brake grease to the six contact ledge points only. Keep grease off the drum surface and friction material.
6. Install the new adjuster assembly and SSH769 shoes using the hardware provided in the kit. Seat hold-down pins first, then route the self-adjuster cable through the cable guide and attach return springs per your reference photograph.
7. Expand the adjuster until the drum fits with light drag when rotated by hand. Back off 1 to 2 clicks for proper running clearance.
8. Reinstall the drum and wheel. Torque lug nuts to 100 ft-lbs in a star pattern. Repeat on the opposite side before lowering the vehicle.
9. Pump the brake pedal firmly until it is solid before moving the vehicle.
10. Perform 8 to 10 moderate stops from 30 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between stops, to bed the friction material against the drum surface.
