How often should ball-joint preload be checked?

Check and set ball-joint preload at least annually or every 3,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Installation Instructions

  1. Confirm that the vehicle has a compatible coil-over suspension. Do not use the control arms with factory-style coil springs.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle securely with a floor jack and jack stands. Follow appropriate spring and suspension safety procedures.
  3. Remove the original front lower control arms and related hardware as required for the application.
  4. Install the included spherical bearing mounts as required by QA1 control arm installation.
  5. For 1967-1969 Camaro and Firebird applications, install the supplied bump stop in the factory bump-stop location on either the front or rear of the control arm.
  6. Install the control arms and loosely fit the control-arm mounting hardware.
  7. Install the lower shock hardware and torque the lower 1/2-inch shock bolt to 50 lb-ft.
  8. Torque the control-arm mounting bolts to 80 lb-ft after the vehicle is at ride height.
  9. Torque the lower ball joint to 65 lb-ft. Continue tightening only as needed to align the cotter-pin hole. Never loosen the nut to align the hole.
  10. Set the ball-joint torque-nut preload to 25-30 in-lb, then back it off 90 degrees.
  11. Torque the ball-joint lock nut to 25 lb-ft.
  12. Adjust the steering-stop bolt using the supplied 3/8-inch washers and torque the bolt to 31 lb-ft.
  13. Grease the ball joint with high-quality NLGI #2 GC-LB lithium-based grease.
  14. Verify that the ball stud has no axial lash and confirm that all fasteners are properly secured.
  15. Perform a professional alignment before driving. For drag racing, maximize positive caster while using toe-in as needed for straight-line stability.
  16. Check and set ball-joint preload at least annually or every 3,000 miles, whichever comes first.
