Frequently Asked Questions
What vehicles does the QA1 QAPHK21-GMB5 Level 1 Handling Kit fit?The QAPHK21-GMB5 fits 1994-1996 GM B-Body vehicles, specifically the Buick Roadmaster (Estate Wagon and Sedan), Chevrolet Caprice (Classic, Classic LS, Classic LTZ), and Chevrolet Impala SS. It is not compatible with earlier 1977-1993 B-Body chassis, which use a different QA1 kit.
Is this a true bolt-in installation or does it require cutting and welding? The QA1 HK21-GMB5 is designed as a bolt-in kit. However, some applications may require minor welding depending on vehicle condition and existing suspension wear. QA1's instructions provide full guidance on what is needed for each component. Most installations can be completed in a home garage with common hand tools and a floor jack.
What is the difference between the QA1 Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 handling kits?Level 1 kits like the QAPHK21-GMB5 include single-adjustable coilovers and focus on a balance of street comfort and improved handling. Level 2 upgrades to double-adjustable shocks for more tuning range. Level 3 adds stiffer spring rates and additional chassis components to maximize cornering performance. All levels are cross-compatible, so you can start at Level 1 and add Level 2 or 3 components later without compatibility issues.
Does the QAPHK21-GMB5 work with LS-swapped B-Body vehicles?Yes. QA1 designed this kit for average-weight small block and LS-powered B-Body vehicles at stock trim. If your vehicle has been significantly modified from its original weight, such as heavy engine swaps with additional ballast, QA1 also offers versions of this kit without shocks so you can select shock spring rates that match your vehicle's actual weight.
Can I lower or raise my vehicle's ride height with this kit?Yes. The single-adjustable coilover design allows ride height adjustment at both the front and rear. The rear coilover system allows you to raise the car approximately 0.5 inches above stock or lower it up to 2 inches below stock. Front ride height is also adjustable within the coilover's design range. Always use a spanner wrench when making adjustments and re-check alignment after any ride height change.
Does this kit include a rear sway bar?No. The QAPHK21-GMB5 Level 1 kit includes a front sway bar only. A rear sway bar is available as a separate upgrade and is included in QA1's Level 2 and Level 3 handling kits for the GM B-Body platform. Adding a rear sway bar is a common next step for drivers seeking further body roll reduction.
What spring rate does the rear coilover system use in the HK21-GMB5?The rear Pro Coil conversion system (QA1 RCK52384) included in the QAPHK21-GMB5 uses a 250 lb./in. spring rate, which is specifically chosen to balance handling performance with ride comfort for average-weight GM B-Body vehicles with stock-level trim weight.
Is this kit compatible with factory rear axle housings?Yes. The QA1 HK21-GMB5 rear coilover conversion system is compatible with the factory GM B-Body rear axle housing. No housing modifications are required. The kit works seamlessly with the original rear end without the need for a custom or aftermarket axle housing.
What is the warranty on the QA1 HK21-GMB5 Handling Kit?QA1 products are backed by the manufacturer's limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. For specific warranty terms and conditions, refer to the documentation included with your kit or contact QA1 directly. Warranty does not cover normal wear, improper installation, or use in competition applications.
Do I need an alignment after installing the QAPHK21-GMB5?Yes. A professional wheel alignment is strongly recommended after installing any suspension components, including this kit. The new coilovers and tie rod sleeves will alter your vehicle's alignment settings. Skipping alignment after installation can lead to uneven tire wear, poor handling, and premature wear of the new suspension components.
Installation Instructions
- Gather required tools: floor jack, jack stands, basic hand tools (SAE and metric sockets in standard and extended lengths), drill with 5/16-inch and 1/2-inch bits, spanner wrench, paint pen, and torque wrench.
- Lift the vehicle and secure it on jack stands at all four corners. Remove front and rear wheels.
- Disconnect and remove OEM front shocks, springs, and related hardware. Remove the factory front sway bar and tie rod sleeves.
- Install the QA1 heavy-duty tie rod sleeves (5252) in place of the OEM sleeves. Tighten to factory torque specification.
- Install the QA1 front Pro Coil single-adjustable coilover system (GS507-10550C). Bolt upper and lower coilover mounts using the included hardware. Do not fully torque until the vehicle is at ride height.
- Install the QA1 front chromoly sway bar (52862) using the included brackets and hardware. Torque end link and bushing hardware per QA1 instructions.
- At the rear, remove OEM shocks and coil springs. Position the QA1 rear coilover conversion brackets; reference the existing holes in the spring perch and mark the additional drill point. Drill the required hole using a 5/16-inch pilot bit followed by a 1/2-inch bit. Paint drilled areas to prevent corrosion.
- Install the QA1 rear Pro Coil single-adjustable coilover system (RCK52384) with thrust bearing kits (7888-109). Insert the four stainless steel spacers between plates and the bearing with the smaller-diameter side facing the bearing.
- Install the lower bracket and torque all fasteners. Insert the coilover shock, routing the upper bolt through the top and the lower bolt through the bottom.
- Lower the vehicle to ride height. Shake the suspension to allow it to settle. Measure ride height and adjust the coilover collars using the spanner wrench to achieve your desired height, targeting shock eye-to-eye distance of approximately 16 inches on rear units for optimal stroke utilization.
- Once at target ride height, fully torque all suspension fasteners to QA1 specifications with the suspension loaded at ride height.
- Reinstall all four wheels. Torque lug nuts to factory spec. Road-test the vehicle and schedule a professional four-wheel alignment before returning to regular driving.
