Adjustable-Rate Rear Sway Bar Engineered for 1964-1967 GM A-Body Muscle Cars

The Ridetech 11239122 MUSCLEbar Rear Sway Bar brings modern suspension engineering to the 1964-1967 GM A-Body platform, covering the Chevrolet Chevelle, El Camino, Buick Skylark, Buick Special, Buick Gran Sport, Buick Sportwagon, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Oldsmobile 442, Oldsmobile F85, Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, Pontiac GTO, Pontiac LeMans, and Pontiac Tempest. Using the same sliding-clamp rate-adjustment system found across the Ridetech MUSCLEbar lineup, the 11239122 allows you to select from a continuous range of bar rates between 200 and 400 lbs without removing or replacing the bar itself. Precision CNC-bent 1-inch diameter steel tubing with a .156-inch wall gives the bar the dimensional accuracy and torsional rigidity needed to produce consistent, repeatable rates. Billet aluminum anodized-black frame mounts and low-friction bushings eliminate the bind and stiction that plague conventional rubber or polyurethane bushing designs, keeping the bar's response clean and linear. Posi-Link end links are included for a complete, bind-free installation on stock or Ridetech trailing arms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles does the Ridetech 11239122 fit?

The Ridetech 11239122 MUSCLEbar fits 1964-1967 GM A-Body vehicles including the Chevrolet Chevelle, El Camino, Buick Skylark, Buick Special, Buick Gran Sport, Buick Sportwagon, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Oldsmobile 442, Oldsmobile F85, Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, Pontiac GTO, Pontiac LeMans, and Pontiac Tempest. All models sharing the standard GM A-Body rear suspension platform are covered.

How does the Ridetech 11239122 adjust its bar rate?

The 11239122 uses a sliding aluminum clamp on the bar that moves fore and aft to change the effective lever arm length. Positioning the clamp further from the axle bracket connection reduces the rate toward 200 lbs, while moving it inward increases the rate toward 400 lbs. This allows continuous rate tuning without removing the bar or ordering a different part.

Does the Ridetech 11239122 bolt onto factory GM A-Body trailing arms?

Yes. The 11239122 is designed to bolt directly onto stock GM A-Body factory trailing arms as well as Ridetech trailing arms. No custom fabrication or trailing arm modification is required for installation on a standard A-Body rear suspension configuration.

What makes the Ridetech 11239122 different from a conventional sway bar?

Unlike conventional fixed-rate sway bars, the Ridetech 11239122 uses CNC-bent tubing to exacting tolerances, billet aluminum low-friction frame mounts, and an adjustable sliding clamp end link system. These features eliminate the rate guesswork, reduce bushing bind, and allow chassis tuning to be performed without replacing hardware.

Is the Ridetech 11239122 suitable for a lowered A-Body build?

Yes. The 11239122 MUSCLEbar was developed specifically for lowered vehicles where the factory sway bar geometry is compromised. The adjustable rate system and Posi-Link end links allow the bar to work correctly across a wider range of suspension geometry than fixed-rate bars.

Does the Ridetech 11239122 work with a Pontiac GTO or LeMans?

Yes. The 1964-1967 Pontiac GTO and LeMans share the GM A-Body platform and are fully supported by the 11239122 fitment. Both the GTO and LeMans use the same rear suspension mounting points as the Chevelle and Skylark on this platform.

What end links does the Ridetech 11239122 include?

The 11239122 includes Posi-Link end links, which are Ridetech's spherical-bearing end link design. Posi-Links provide a bind-free, low-friction connection between the sway bar and the rear axle, avoiding the deflection and flex common with conventional rubber or polyurethane end link bushings.

Does the Ridetech 11239122 require any drilling or modification to the frame?

For most standard 1964-1967 GM A-Body applications, the 11239122 uses the existing frame mounting locations with the included brackets. Drilling is generally not required on original unmodified frames, though custom or tubbed builds may need additional clearancing depending on the specific chassis modifications performed.

Installation Instructions

  1. Safely raise the rear of the vehicle and support on jack stands at the frame rails. Do not support by the rear axle.
  2. Place a floor jack under the rear axle to allow controlled movement during installation.
  3. Install the frame brackets at the designated mounting points on the frame rails. Snug fasteners only at this stage.
  4. Slide the low-friction bushings into the frame brackets and position the sway bar through them.
  5. Attach the axle brackets to the rear axle housing using the supplied U-bolts. Snug only at this stage.
  6. Connect the Posi-Link end links between the sway bar ends and the axle brackets. Ensure all rod ends are properly threaded and seated.
  7. Set the sliding aluminum clamp to your desired rate position before final tightening.
  8. Lower the vehicle to ride height and torque all hardware to specification including the axle bracket U-bolts, frame bracket fasteners, and Posi-Link hardware.
  9. Verify full clearance between the bar and all chassis, body, exhaust, and fuel system components through the complete suspension travel range.
  10. Recheck all fastener torques after the first 100 miles of operation.

Suspension

Aftermarket suspension systems improve handling, ride quality, and ride height adjustment beyond what the factory suspension provides. From lowering springs and coilover kits for sport handling to lift kits and leveling kits for truck and SUV off-road capability, quality suspension components transform how a vehicle rides and handles. Popular Suspension Upgrades Popular suspension upgrades include coilover kits for adjustable ride height and damping, sport lowering springs for improved handling and reduced body roll, performance shock absorbers and strut assemblies, sway bar and end link upgrade kits, subframe brace kits, and complete suspension packages for lifted trucks and off-road SUVs. Alignment kits including camber bolts and camber arms are also frequently ordered after ride height changes. What is the difference between coilovers and lowering springs? Coilovers are complete shock and spring assemblies with adjustable ride height set by threading the spring perch on the shock...
