High Durometer Polyurethane Rear End Housing Bushings for 1965-1988 GM A-Body and G-Body Cars, Red
The red version of UMI's rear end housing bushing set. It replaces the two rubber upper control arm bushings that sit in the axle housing ears with high durometer polyurethane, and supplies two polyurethane thrust washers to keep them from walking side to side. On an A-body or G-body rear suspension, these are usually the last soft mount left after the control arms have been upgraded.

This listing publishes 1965-1988 because that is what UMI's product page, the header of its installation sheet and the product label on the back of that sheet all state. Dealer titles say 65-87 and the previous store title repeated it, so the range has been corrected.
Axle variation, in UMI's words: due to the amount of vehicles this item fits and the number of rear ends available by GM your install may be slightly different and may not require all supplied hardware. UMI adds that some vehicles may not require a thrust washer, that it is ok to run any vehicle without this washer and will cause no problems, and that some 12-bolt models may require trimming of thrust washer.
UMI lists this part as not a direct bolt-on, because the original bushings must be pressed, drilled or burned out of the housing ears before the new ones go in.

Why does this listing say 1965-1988 when other shops say 65-87?Because every UMI authored source says 1988. The product page, the installation sheet header and the product label on the back of the sheet all use 1965-1988, while the 87 end year appears only in dealer titles. The store title has been corrected to match UMI.
Where do these bushings actually sit?In the ears of the rear end housing, where the upper control arms bolt on. They are the bushings that stay with the axle when the arms are removed, not the bushings inside the arms.
Is the red version any harder than the black one?No published difference. UMI publishes the same high durometer polyurethane description for both, and the suffix denotes colour. Choose on appearance.
What comes in the box?Two polyurethane bushings and two polyurethane thrust washers, plus the UMI installation sheet. UMI's page calls them washers and the sheet calls them thrust washers, which are the same items.
Do I need the thrust washers on my car?Maybe not. UMI states that your vehicle may or may not use these depending on rear end or year, that some vehicles may not require a thrust washer, and that it is ok to run any vehicle without this washer and will cause no problems. Some 12-bolt models may require trimming of thrust washer. If one is used, it slides on the forward face of the bushing before the arm goes back on.
How hard is the removal job?It is the real work in this installation. UMI's sheet allows a control arm bushing removal tool, drilling numerous holes through the OEM rubber and punching out the sleeve, or burning the rubber out with a torch and punching out the sleeve. For the torch method UMI says to use extreme caution with flame and keep away from gas lines.
Do they need grease?Yes at installation. UMI's sheet says to apply a thick amount of grease on all sides of the bushing to prevent squeaking and prolong bushing life. UMI publishes no zerk fitting or grease groove for this part, so it is not a serviceable greasable bushing.
What torque do the upper control arm bolts take?UMI publishes none for this part number, so this listing does not print one. Use the applicable General Motors factory service information for your model year, and tighten with the suspension at ride height.
Should I expect a harsher ride?Polyurethane transmits more than rubber, which is the point of the change, and UMI's warranty text separately excludes normal wear on bushings. UMI publishes no ride quality or noise measurement, so treat comfort claims either way as unpublished.
Which UMI warranty applies, the two year policy or the text printed on the instruction sheet?They are two different documents. UMI's policies page publishes a two year limited warranty to the original purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship, with exclusions for normal wear on bushings and bearings, improper installation, alteration and exceeding the design limits of the part. Installation Instructions
- Support the rear of the car safely and unbolt the upper control arms from the rear end housing ears.
- Remove the stock bushings with a control arm bushing removal tool, or drill numerous holes through the OEM rubber to remove as much rubber as possible and then punch out the steel sleeve inside the housing ear.
- UMI also allows burning the rubber out with a torch before punching out the sleeve, with the instruction to use extreme caution with flame and keep away from gas lines. Repeat on both sides.
- Clean the housing ear before the new bushing goes in.
- Install each bushing from the outside in, rearward to forward, tapping it home with a small piece of wood and a hammer until the step in the sleeve limits travel.
- If your axle uses one, slide a thrust washer onto the forward face of the bushing before refitting the upper control arm, trimming it if a 12-bolt housing requires it.
- Apply a thick amount of grease on all sides of the bushing to prevent squeaking and prolong bushing life.
- Refit the upper control arms and tighten at ride height using the applicable General Motors factory service information for torque, since UMI publishes none for this part.
