On a 1970-1981 Camaro or Firebird the same spring gives a 2.5 inch drop. On a 1978-1988 G-Body it gives a 1 inch drop. How much will my car actually drop, 1 inch or 2.5 inches?

It depends entirely on which platform you are fitting. UMI's application table gives 2.5 inches of lowering on a 1970-1981 GM F-Body and 1 inch of lowering on a 1978-1988 GM G-Body from this same spring. Read your own car's row and ignore the other one. On top of that, UMI qualifies the figure: lightened cars may need trimming, a V6 Turbo Grand National may need trimming because it carries less engine weight, and UMI states in writing that ride height is approximate and cannot be guaranteed.

Why does one spring give two different drops?

Because drop is the result of the rate acting against the weight the corner carries and the geometry of the pocket it sits in. Fit the springs first, measure the car, and only trim once you know how far off target you are.

What happens with a Big Block, or with a lightweight V6 Turbo Grand National?

The two ends of the weight range behave differently. UMI publishes a fitment note that a V6 Turbo Grand National may require spring trimming because of its lower engine weight, which is to say a light nose will not compress the spring as far and the car will sit higher than the nominal figure. I have seen 530 lb/in quoted for UMI front springs. Which number is right?

Both numbers come from UMI. The product page for this part number states a linear 600 lb/in front rate, and UMI's platform level G-Body spring height and lowering guides state 530 lb/in. The 600 figure is published on this listing because the part number page is the document UMI maintains per SKU, while the same 530 wording also appears verbatim on UMI's A-Body guide, which suggests reused platform copy rather than a measurement of this spring. The rear figure of 130 lb/in agrees across all of those pages. If the exact rate matters for a shock or bar calculation, confirm it with UMI before you commit to a valving choice.

Do I need a spring compressor, and what torque do the fasteners get?

Yes, a proper spring compressor is mandatory. A loaded coil in a GM short-and-long arm front suspension stores enough energy to be lethal if it is released uncontrolled. On torque, UMI publishes no ft-lb figure for these springs in any of its documents, so none is printed here. Use the factory service specification for your year and model on the lower control arm, shock and spindle fasteners, and tighten suspension pivots with the car at ride height.

Do I need new shocks at the same time?

Installation Instructions

  1. Support the car safely on stands and remove the front wheels.
  2. Fit a proper spring compressor to the factory coil and remove the old spring following the factory service procedure for your year and model.
  3. Clean the upper spring bucket completely before the new spring goes in. Debris in the bucket is one of UMI's listed causes of a car sitting too high.
  4. Fit the new spring with the flat coil end up and the open coil end down into the lower A-arm.
  5. Clock the open end correctly: against the ramp on UMI control arms, or between the weep holes on stock GM arms. Disregard the orientation of the UMI sticker.
  6. Confirm the spring is fully seated and that the frame fingers sit inside the spring, not outside it.
  7. Release the compressor, refit the wheels and lower the car.
  8. Let the suspension settle, then measure ride height at all four corners before deciding whether any trimming is needed.
  9. Have the front end aligned.
