Bolt-In Front Frame Reinforcement Brace for the 1978-1988 GM G-Body, Red

The G-Body's front frame horns and crossmember area flex more than most owners realise, and the usual answer has been the old Grand Prix bar. This brace replaces that part and the stamped factory reinforcements with one piece of 1-1/4 inch USA tubing welded to 3/16 inch laser cut brackets, bolted into existing factory holes with no drilling and weighing 9-1/2 pounds complete with its hardware.

It is not only a track part. UMI notes the same stiffening reduces the squeaks and rattles the platform is known for, which is the kind of change you notice on a rough road long before you notice it on a skidpad. The red powder coat matches the rest of UMI's red G-Body range, and unlike many braces this one arrives with UMI's own itemised Grade 8 bolt kit and two published torque figures.

Key Features

  • Stiffens the front frame horns and crossmember area of the G-Body chassis.
  • Replaces the popular Grand Prix bar and the stock front frame reinforcements.
  • 1-1/4 inch USA tubing, precision bent and welded to 3/16 inch laser cut mounting brackets.
  • 9-1/2 pounds including the supplied hardware, so the stiffness costs almost nothing in weight.
  • Bolts to existing factory holes with no drilling required.
  • Grade 8 mounting hardware included and itemised by UMI, with published torque values.
  • Also reduces the squeaks and rattles common to the GM G-body platform.
  • Red powder coat, tested by UMI on five different cars and used on its own G-Body Green Machine.

Fitment

Vehicle Years
Buick Regal 1978-1987
Chevrolet El Camino 1978-1987
Chevrolet Malibu 1978-1983
Chevrolet Monte Carlo 1978-1988
GMC Caballero 1978-1987
Oldsmobile Cutlass 1978-1988
Pontiac Bonneville 1982-1986
Pontiac Grand Prix 1978-1987

UMI publishes this eight vehicle list on the 3053 page as the confirmed application, so the fitment above is manufacturer-confirmed rather than inferred.

Suitability exclusion, published by UMI with a warning icon on its own page: this brace is not currently approved for the Grand National platform with intercooler. That is a fitment statement about what the part will physically suit, and it is not a warranty condition of any kind. If your car is an intercooled Grand National, this is the wrong part for it.

UMI also states that some occasional grinding may be necessary because of GM G-body product tolerances, although it was not required during UMI's testing on five different cars of various years. The mounting holes themselves are factory holes and no drilling is required.

Bolt size variance: UMI's sheet notes that some G-bodies may need 10mm bolts instead of the supplied 3/8 inch bolts in the rear mounting location.

UMI publishes year, make and model only for this part number, with no submodel, trim, engine or drivetrain breakdown, so the fitment tags on this listing stop at model rather than inventing a trim.

Suitability versus warranty UMI sells this brace for street, strip, autocross and road racing use on a G-Body, and runs one on its own G-Body Green Machine. That is a suitability statement about what the part is built to do. UMI's warranty separately excludes damage caused by exceeding the design limits of the part, by competition use and by improper installation, and excludes bushings and bearings as normal wear items
Manufacturer warranty UMI publishes a two year warranty from the original date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, to the original purchaser only and not transferable
Warranty exclusions Misuse, abuse, neglect or accident, use exceeding the design limits of the product, improper installation, acts of God, shipping damage, any product altered, adjusted or tampered with, non-UMI components, incidental costs such as towing and labour, and normal wear items including bearings and bushings
Warranty document conflict The printed installation sheets still carry an older point-of-purchase disclaimer that predates the current two year term. UMI's published policy page is the current warranty and is the text summarised here. Neither document is a Black Ops Auto Works warranty
Country of manufacture United States. UMI states its suspension components are 100 percent USA manufactured from North American raw material supplied by leading USA steel suppliers
Supplier-only data excluded Shipping weights, carton sizes and retailer line codes such as the 185 and UPI prefixes are reseller catalogue data, not UMI part numbers or UMI specifications, and are not reproduced here as product specifications

That is UMI's own box contents table from the installation sheet, reproduced item for item with its part numbers and quantities. Nothing has been added to it and no quantity has been inferred.

Note the bolt size variance UMI documents: some cars need 10mm bolts rather than the supplied 3/8 inch bolts in the rear mounting location, and those are not in the box.

About UMI Performance

UMI Performance builds chassis and suspension parts at 509 Hemlock Street in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, from North American raw material supplied by leading USA steel suppliers, with machine-guided precision bent DOM tubing, precision laser cut components, Tiger Dry Lac powder coat and welds laid by skilled and robotic welders. The 3053 brace is one of the parts UMI develops and validates on its own G-Body project car, and it is documented with a full itemised box contents table and published torque values rather than a generic hardware included note.

FAQ

What does a front reinforcement brace actually do on a G-body?

It ties the front frame horns and the crossmember area together so the front of the chassis twists and flexes less under cornering, braking and launch loads. On a car with a stiffer front bar, wider tyres or more power, that flex is what makes the steering feel vague and the front geometry move around. UMI also notes the reduction in squeaks and rattles that comes with the same stiffening, which is the part most owners notice first on the street.

Does it replace the Grand Prix bar, or install alongside it?

It replaces it. UMI describes the brace as replacing the popular Grand Prix bar and the stock frame reinforcements, and the installation sheet has you locate and remove the existing front braces under the car near the sway bar before the UMI part goes up.

Will it fit my Grand National?

Only if it is not intercooled. UMI publishes a warning on its own page that this brace is not currently approved for the Grand National platform with intercooler. That is purely a question of what physically suits the car, not a warranty exclusion, so an intercooled car should not be ordered against this part number at all rather than fitted and then claimed against.

Is drilling required?

No. The brace mounts to the existing factory holes and UMI states no drilling is required. What UMI does say is that GM's frame tolerances vary from car to car, so some occasional grinding may be necessary to dress a bracket edge. UMI did not need to do it on any of the five cars it tested across different model years.

What torque do the bolts get?

UMI publishes two figures for this part: apply a final torque of 65 ft-lbs to the 1/2 inch hex bolts and 28 ft-lbs to the 3/8 inch hex bolts. Those are the only torque values UMI publishes for this brace, and they should not be carried across to any other part number.

Exactly what hardware comes in the box?

UMI itemises it, which is unusual and worth taking advantage of: two 1/2-13 x 1-1/4 hex bolts, two 1/2-13 nylock nuts, two 1/2 inch flat washers, two 3/8-16 x 1-1/4 hex bolts, two 3/8 inch lock washers, two 3/8 inch flat washers, the brace itself and the printed instruction sheet. Check the bag against that list before you raise the car.

Some cars need 10mm bolts in the rear location. How do I know if mine does?

You find out at the trial fit. UMI's note is that some G-bodies may require 10mm bolts instead of 3/8 inch bolts in the rear mounting location, which reflects variation in the factory frame. Offer the brace up and try the supplied 3/8 inch bolt in the rear hole before final assembly; if it will not pick up cleanly, source Grade 8 10mm hardware of the same length.

How much does it weigh, and how much ground clearance does it cost?

UMI publishes the weight as 9-1/2 pounds including the hardware, and describes it elsewhere as less than 10 pounds. UMI publishes no dimensional drawing and no ground clearance figure for the brace, so no number is quoted here. It mounts in the same area as the factory braces it replaces, and clearance should be checked on your own car during the trial fit if it is heavily lowered.

Will it clear my headers, oil pan or steering linkage?

UMI publishes no clearance statement for aftermarket headers, pans or steering components, so no promise is made here. The brace occupies the space the factory front braces occupied, so a car with standard components is straightforward. On a car with long tube headers, a deep sump or relocated steering, offer the part up and check before torquing anything.

Should I fit the rear shock tower brace at the same time?

They are the front and rear halves of the same job and they share exactly the same eight vehicle G-Body application, so doing both in one session is the efficient route and UMI has produced a single video covering the pair. Each works independently, though, so there is no requirement to buy both at once.

Is red or black any different mechanically?

No. The colour suffix changes the powder coat only. Both are the same 1-1/4 inch tube and 3/16 inch bracket assembly with the same hardware and the same torque figures. Choose red if the rest of the underbody hardware is red, black if you would rather it disappear.

What warranty applies, and what is excluded from it?

UMI publishes a two year warranty from the original date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, to the original purchaser only, and it is not transferable. The same policy excludes misuse, use beyond the design limits of the part, improper installation, acts of God, shipping damage, any product that has been altered, adjusted or tampered with, components not made by UMI, incidental costs such as towing and labour, and normal wear items including bearings and bushings. UMI also states it cannot guarantee compatibility with other manufacturers' components. The printed sheet in the box still carries an older disclaimer that predates the current two year term, and the live policy page is the document that governs. Neither is a Black Ops Auto Works warranty.

Installation Instructions

  1. Raise the car to a comfortable working height and follow applicable safety procedures with proper jack stands or a lift.
  2. Gather SAE wrenches and sockets. Read UMI's two up-front notes first: minor grinding may be needed because of each subframe's unique dimensions, and some G-bodies need 10mm bolts instead of 3/8 inch bolts in the rear mounting location.
  3. Locate the existing front braces, which sit directly under the car near the sway bar, and remove them.
  4. Raise the UMI brace to the existing factory holes and hand tighten the 1/2 inch hex bolts with their locknuts and washers in the front slots.
  5. Match the rearward slots to the existing factory holes and hand tighten the 3/8 inch hex bolt with its lock washer and flat washer.
  6. With everything located and nothing cross-threaded, apply the final torque of 65 ft-lbs to the 1/2 inch hex bolts.
  7. Apply the final torque of 28 ft-lbs to the 3/8 inch hex bolts.
  8. Check clearance around the sway bar, exhaust and steering components before lowering the car.

65 ft-lbs and 28 ft-lbs are the only torque values UMI publishes for this part number. Do not carry them across to other UMI parts, and do not substitute a generic figure for either one.

The sheet contains no cutting, drilling or welding step. This is a genuine bolt-in part.
