UMI Billet Aluminum Short Shifter Handle for the 1979-2004 Ford Mustang 5-Speed
This is the UMI Performance short stick for the 1979-2004 Ford Mustang 5-speed, a CNC machined replacement handle that bolts onto the shifter base you already have. It repositions the knob so your hand sits where it needs to be for fast gear changes, and UMI lists the job at about ten minutes with the shift boot and knob reused.

FAQ
Will my factory shift knob still fit?Yes. UMI states the handle is compatible with stock and aftermarket shift knobs, and the installation sheet has you unscrew the original knob counter-clockwise and thread it back on at the end.
Is this a complete shifter, or just the handle?It is the handle only. The stick bolts to the shifter base already in the car, so the base, cables and linkage are untouched.
How much does it shorten the throw?UMI does not publish a throw-reduction figure for this handle. What UMI does claim is the feel of a short shifter and a hand position that suits quick shifts, at a fraction of the cost of a full short-throw shifter.
Which shifter bases does it bolt to?UMI states the stick bolts to various popular shifter bases in addition to the factory unit, using the two supplied bolts through the mounting holes.
What tools does the swap take?A 13mm wrench removes the two bolts on the right side of the stock handle, and the same wrench installs the UMI stick. No drilling, cutting or welding is published for this part.
Should I use thread locker?UMI highly recommends a small amount of Blue Loctite 242 on the mounting bolt threads.
My knob will not tighten facing forward. Any fix?UMI's sheet suggests wrapping the knob threads with Teflon tape so the knob clocks and holds in the position you want.

Installation Instructions
- Unscrew the shift knob counter-clockwise and carefully lift the shift boot away from the console.
- Use a 13mm wrench to remove the two bolts on the right side of the stock shifter handle.
- Position the UMI short stick on the left side of the shifter, toward the driver's seat, with the threads facing back.
- Apply a small amount of Blue Loctite 242 thread lock, then fit the two supplied bolts with their lock washers and tighten them.
- Slide the shift boot back into place over the new stick and seat it in the console.
- Thread the shift knob back on; if it will not tighten in the position you want, wrap the threads with Teflon tape and retry.
