UMI 22mm Tubular Rear Sway Bar for the 1982-2002 Camaro and Firebird, Bright Red
This 22mm tubular rear bar steps up from the factory 19mm piece on both third and fourth generation F-body cars, and it arrives as a complete kit with heavy duty end links, greaseable bushings and zinc plated clamshells. It mounts to the existing factory sway bar mounts, and UMI states it installs with no modifications required.
Key Features
- 22mm, or 7/8 inch, tubular rear bar, more rigid than the factory 19mm bar.
- Tubular construction, CNC bent and formed as one piece.
- Heavy duty end links included.
- Greaseable sway bar bushings with zinc plated clamshells.
- Mounts to the existing factory rear sway bar mounts.
- Covers both third and fourth generation cars from 1982 through 2002.
- Powder coated bright red finish.
Fitment
| Vehicle | Application |
|---|---|
| Chevrolet Camaro | 1982-2002, third and fourth generation F-body, rear |
| Pontiac Firebird | 1982-2002, third and fourth generation F-body, rear |
The supplied end links are intended to work with a majority of cars at reasonable ride heights. UMI states that excessive raising or lowering, or use with other manufacturers' products, may require the purchase of shorter or longer end links.
End links look incorrect when the suspension hangs in full droop. UMI asks that you evaluate them with the car on all four tires at ride height, and notes the links do not have to be perfectly level or centred.

About UMI Performance
UMI Performance designs and manufactures chassis and suspension parts at 509 Hemlock Street in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, using North American raw materials, laser-cut plate, CNC bending and precision welding. UMI sells direct and through dealers, ships most orders within three business days from Philipsburg, and publishes a printed installation sheet with each part number. FAQ
What size bar does this replace?UMI states it is more rigid than the factory 19mm, or 3/4 inch, rear bar.
Which model years does it cover?1982 through 2002 Camaro and Firebird. Unlike most parts in this range, the fitment attribute, the title and the resolved fitment all agree on the full 1982-2002 span.
Is the bar solid or hollow?Tubular, CNC bent and formed as one piece.
What material is it?UMI publishes tubular high carbon steel in the description and Chromoly in the attribute table on the same page. Because those disagree, no single material is claimed here.
What is the centre-to-centre dimension?UMI does not publish one for this bar, unlike its front bars.
Are end links and bushings supplied?Yes. The kit includes two heavy duty end links and two greaseable sway bar bushings with clamshells.
My car is lowered. Will the end links fit?UMI states the supplied links suit a majority of cars at reasonable ride heights, and that excessive raising or lowering, or mixing with other manufacturers' parts, may require shorter or longer links.
The links look crooked with the car in the air. Is that normal?Yes. UMI notes end links look incorrect at full droop and asks you to judge them with the car at ride height on all four tires; they need not be perfectly level or centred.
What are the torque specifications?None are published. UMI's only tightening instruction is the end link method, with the car at ride height, using a 9/16 inch wrench until the bushings begin to bulge slightly. For chassis fasteners use the applicable General Motors factory service information for your model year.
Can I grease the bushings? The sway bar bushings that clamp the bar to the chassis are greaseable. The end link bushings are a different set and UMI specifically says not to grease them.
Does it require modification to fit?UMI's prose states it installs easily with no modifications required, and the new clamshells mount to the existing factory sway bar mounts. This particular page carries no direct bolt-on or modifications attribute rows.
Installation Instructions
- Jack under the rear end and place two jack stands in front of the rear tires on the frame so the rear end unloads.
- Remove the old end links first, using an impact wrench or cutting them off if needed, then remove the factory bar.
- Install the new end links one side at a time, finger tight.
- Attach the bar to both end links finger tight, then mount the new clamshells to the existing factory sway bar mounts.
- Centre the bar under the rear end.
- Assemble each end link with the washers cupping toward the bushings and the bushing nipple centering the stack in the sway bar and control arm mounting points.
- Lower the car so it sits at ride height on all four tires before the end links are tightened, because UMI states the vehicle weight must be on the sway bar to prevent bushing bind.
- Using a 9/16 inch wrench and ratchet, tighten each end link only until the bushings start to bulge slightly, and do not grease or over tighten the end link bushings.
- Turn the steering wheel lock to lock and check clearance around the brake lines, tie rods and control arms before driving.
Procedure comes from UMI's own Item 2113 installation sheet. UMI does not host this installation sheet on its own website. The document is UMI's own printed sheet, on UMI letterhead, served from a retailer's static PDF host, so treat it as a manufacturer document on a retailer host rather than a current UMI-hosted page. No ft-lb torque values appear in that sheet.
