Grade 8 Rear Torque Arm Through-Bolt Hardware Kit for the 1982-2002 Camaro and Firebird
The rear torque arm mount is one of the most heavily loaded fastener locations under an F-body, and the factory hardware is the weak link once power goes up. This kit supplies Grade 8 9/16 inch by 7-1/2 inch through bolts sized for the rear end housing, so the torque arm mount is clamped with the right diameter and the right grade instead of whatever survived the last thirty years.
Key Features
- Grade 8 through bolts for the rear torque arm mounting point.
- 9/16 inch diameter by 7-1/2 inch long, sized to pass through the rear end housing.
- Suits factory rear end housings as well as Strange and Moser 9 inch housings and most other through-bolt housings.
- Published by UMI for the full 1982-2002 F-Body run, third and fourth generation.
- Sold as a kit for the rear torque arm mount.
- Made in the USA by UMI Performance.
Fitment
| Vehicle | Application |
|---|---|
| Chevrolet Camaro | 1982-2002, rear torque arm mount, through-bolt rear end housing |
| Pontiac Firebird | 1982-2002, rear torque arm mount, through-bolt rear end housing |
Housing exclusion, in UMI's words: This kit will not work with Moser Engineering 12-Bolt rear-end housings. For the Moser 12-Bolt we recommend UMI P/N 2998. Check what is under your car before ordering, because the exclusion is about the housing rather than the model year.
Positive coverage published by UMI: factory rear end housings, Strange housings, Moser 9 inch housings and most other through-bolt style housings.
The bolt is a through bolt, so it needs a housing that accepts one. A housing with blind threaded bosses instead of a through hole is not an application for this kit.

About UMI Performance
UMI Performance designs and manufactures chassis and suspension parts at 509 Hemlock Street in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, using North American raw material, in-house laser cutting, CNC bending and fixture welding. UMI's F-body torque arm range runs from replacement hardware like this kit up to complete adjustable torque arms, and UMI publishes part 2998 as the Moser 12-bolt alternative to this kit.
FAQ
Will this work with a Moser 12-bolt rear end?No. UMI is explicit: this kit will not work with Moser Engineering 12-Bolt rear-end housings, and for the Moser 12-Bolt UMI recommends its part number 2998 instead. Confirm which housing is in your car before ordering, because the exclusion depends on the housing rather than the year.
Which housings does it work with?UMI publishes factory rear end housings, Strange housings, Moser 9 inch housings and most other through-bolt style housings. The common requirement is a housing that accepts a through bolt at the torque arm mount.
Which way do the bolts go in?From the top, with the nuts on the bottom. That is UMI's own instruction for this kit and it is worth following exactly, because it keeps the threaded end and the nut clear of the mount face and makes later inspection possible from underneath.
How many bolts are in the kit?UMI does not publish a count, and no dealer record itemises one. The kit is sold as the hardware for the rear torque arm mount. Ask us to confirm against the current pack if you need the exact number before ordering.
What size are the bolts?9/16 inch diameter by 7-1/2 inch long, in Grade 8. The length is what allows the bolt to pass all the way through the housing mount rather than thread into it.
What torque do they take?UMI publishes none for this part number and there is no UMI installation sheet for it, so this listing does not print a figure. Use the applicable General Motors factory service information for your model year, or the specification from the manufacturer of your aftermarket housing or torque arm.
Does it fit a third generation car as well as a fourth generation one?Yes. UMI publishes the kit across the full 1982-2002 F-Body run, covering both the third and fourth generation Camaro and Firebird, provided the housing takes a through bolt.
Do I get nuts and washers with it?UMI describes the kit as the hardware for the mount and its instruction references nuts on the bottom, but it does not publish an itemised parts list. Treat the nut and washer content as unpublished rather than assuming a count.
Is this the same as a complete torque arm?No. This is fastener hardware for the existing torque arm mount. UMI's adjustable and fixed torque arms are separate products with their own part numbers.
Which UMI warranty applies, the two year policy or the text printed on the instruction sheet? They are two different documents. UMI's policies page publishes a two year limited warranty to the original purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship, with exclusions for normal wear on bushings and bearings, improper installation, alteration and exceeding the design limits of the part. The disclaimer printed on UMI's installation sheets is narrower and says parts are warranted to be free of defect at the time of purchase, with remedy limited to replacement. Read the policies page as the customer facing warranty and the sheet as the in-box legal notice. Neither one is a Black Ops Auto Works warranty.
Installation Instructions
- Identify your rear end housing first and confirm it is not a Moser Engineering 12-Bolt, which UMI excludes from this kit.
- Support the vehicle safely and support the rear axle so the torque arm mount is not carrying suspension load while the bolts are out.
- Remove the existing torque arm mount hardware and clean the mount faces and the through hole in the housing.
- Insert each 9/16 inch by 7-1/2 inch Grade 8 bolt from the top only, with the nut on the bottom, exactly as UMI specifies.
- Fit washers as the mount requires and run the nuts up finger tight.
- Lower the vehicle to ride height so the torque arm sits in its normal loaded position before final tightening.
- Tighten using the applicable General Motors factory service information for your model year, or the specification supplied by the manufacturer of your aftermarket housing or torque arm, because UMI publishes no torque value for this kit.
- Recheck the fasteners after the first drive and again after the first few hundred miles.
UMI publishes no installation sheet for part 3003. The steps above are a safe fitting sequence built around UMI's published top only orientation instruction, not a UMI procedure, and they do not replace GM factory service information or the instructions supplied with your torque arm or rear end housing.
