UMI Tubular Non-Adjustable Rear Lower Control Arms in Black for the 1982-2002 Camaro and Firebird
The stamped rear lower control arms under a Camaro or Firebird flex and let the soft rubber bushings deflect, which is where wheel hop starts. This pair replaces them with TIG welded mild steel tubing, CNC machined ends, zinc-plated steel sleeves and fluted greaseable polyurethane bushings, all under a gloss black powder coat, and everything bolts to the factory mounting points with the original hardware.

Are these adjustable in length?No. This pair is the non-adjustable version, sized to the factory dimension so ride height and pinion angle stay where the car already is.
Do I get bolts with them?No. UMI lists hardware as not included because the arms reuse the factory control arm bolts in the factory mounting points.
Which grease should I use?A non-lithium grease, applied with a grease gun, one to one and a half pumps per fitting.
Why do the fittings need to face down?UMI has you install the arms with the grease fittings angled toward the ground so a grease gun can reach them once the car is back together.
Can I remove both arms at once?UMI advises against it. Taking both arms off together lets the rear axle shift forward, so the sheet has you work one side at a time.
What torque do the bolts take?UMI recommends 72 ft-lbs on the lower control arm bolts, tightened after the weight of the car is back on the rear axle.
Will these stop wheel hop?UMI's published claim is that they minimize wheel hop, along with better cornering and more consistent track times, by removing the flex and deflection of the stamped arms and rubber bushings.
What size tubing is used?UMI publishes two different tubing descriptions for this arm across its own pages, so no single diameter is quoted here. What both sources agree on is mild steel tubing with CNC machined ends and TIG welded construction.
Do the bushings squeak?UMI's procedure asks you to lubricate the bushing surfaces before installation specifically to reduce noise as well as to ease fitment, and the grease fittings let you re-lubricate later.
Is welding or drilling needed?No. The arms use the existing mounting points and the original bolts, so no fabrication is involved.
Installation Instructions
- Raise the rear of the car until both rear wheels are off the ground and set two jack stands under the frame; UMI specifies not to support the car by the rear axle.
- Work one side at a time, because removing both arms together allows the axle housing to shift forward.
- Use 18mm wrenches and sockets to remove the front and rear lower control arm bolts on that side, then take the factory arm out.
- Lubricate the polyurethane bushing surfaces before fitting the UMI arm, which eases installation, protects the bushings and reduces noise.
- Install the arm with the grease fittings angled toward the ground so a grease gun can reach them later.
- Leave the bolts loose until the weight of the vehicle is back on the rear axle, so the bushings are not preloaded at the wrong ride height.
- Repeat the removal and fitting on the opposite side.
- Reposition the jack stands under the rear axle to load the suspension, then tighten all four mounting bolts to the UMI recommended 72 ft-lbs.
- Give each grease fitting one to one and a half pumps of non-lithium grease with a grease gun, and avoid over-greasing.
