Boxed Weld-In Subframe Connectors for the 1982-1992 Camaro and Firebird, Red Powder Coat

The red powder coated version of UMI's boxed third generation connectors. They weld to the floor structure at six major points and use the lower control arm mounting point as part of the tie-in, which is what separates a boxed connector like this from a plain tube run between the rails. The passenger side is split into two pieces so it can step over the exhaust.

Key Features

  • Six major weld points across a three piece set, with the driver side supplied as one piece.
  • Rectangular mild steel tubing measuring 2.000 inches by 1.250 inches with a 0.120 inch wall.
  • Machined mounting points cut on CNC equipment from 0.188 inch mild steel plate.
  • The rear mount captures the lower control arm mounting point instead of running past it, which UMI credits for the added rigidity.
  • MIG welded on UMI fixtures before the powder coat goes on.
  • One part number covers hard top, T-Top and convertible cars.
  • No loss of ground clearance according to UMI.
  • Hardware and detailed instructions ship in the box.

Fitment

Vehicle Application
Chevrolet Camaro 1982-1992 third generation F-body, all body styles
Pontiac Firebird 1982-1992 third generation F-body, all body styles

Two versions of the exhaust caveat exist and the stronger one governs. The sheet in the box reads: Note: May not fit 88-92 models with dual catalytic converters. UMI's web page instead speaks of minor adjustments to the connectors or exhaust on dual converter cars. Buy on the assumption that the sheet is right.

UMI designed the set around a stock platform with a factory single catalytic converter, and warns on the same sheet that certain exhaust systems may require adjustment on the passenger side.

Third generation only. UMI's separate fourth generation subframe connector article covers 1993-2002 cars with different parts and says nothing about this part number.

About UMI Performance

UMI Performance designs and manufactures chassis and suspension parts at 509 Hemlock Street in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, using North American raw material, in-house laser cutting, CNC bending and fixture welding. UMI publishes third generation and fourth generation subframe connector installation articles alongside these parts, and notes that its weld-in units are the same as its bolt-in units minus the bolt kit.

FAQ

What is the exhaust warning on this part?

The installation sheet in the box states: Note: May not fit 88-92 models with dual catalytic converters. UMI's website wording is gentler and mentions only minor adjustments to the connectors or the exhaust. The sheet is the stronger statement and this listing publishes it as the one to plan around, because the set was designed around a stock single converter exhaust.

Is welding really required, or can I bolt them in?

Welding is required. The lower control arm bolt passes through the connector and holds it while you position it, but nothing is structurally attached until the front mounting points and both sides of the rear mounting point are welded on each side of the car.

What has to happen before the welder is struck?

The car has to be sitting on its suspension. UMI's sheet reads: Vehicles suspension MUST be completely loaded and level while welding, with the rear tires on blocks or ramps carrying the complete weight of the vehicle. Weld it on stands with the suspension hanging and you lock the body into a shape it never sees on the road.

Where do the jack stands go?

UMI specifies two under each front A-arm and two on the inner frame rails at the rear, and states: Do not place jack stands under rear axle. If you are on a drive-on lift, UMI says to disregard the jacking steps entirely.

Who should be doing this job?

UMI's own answer is a trained automotive technician with welding experience only, adding that if you feel you are not capable of completing this installation please do not attempt, and that UMI Performance Incorporated is not responsible for incorrect installation of this product.

What is the 72 ft-lb figure I keep seeing?

It is a bushing compression note, not a torque specification. UMI writes that it may be necessary to tighten the front control arm bolts as much as 72 ft-lb in order to compress the bushing. The qualifier is part of the statement and this listing keeps it.

Why does the set come in three pieces?

Exhaust clearance on the passenger side. The driver side is one piece, and pieces B and C on the passenger side let the connector step over the exhaust with roughly half an inch of clearance above a stock system. Aftermarket routing may change that gap.

Are the bolts and nuts supplied?

Yes. UMI states that all necessary hardware and detailed installation instructions are included, and the sheet confirms that supplied bolts and nuts reattach the lower control arms. UMI does not print an itemised parts table for this kit, so counts, sizes and grades are unpublished.

Will these clear the road?

UMI states that ground clearance is not affected. No drop measurement is published, and UMI does not publish connector length or set weight either.

Do I lose anything by choosing red over black?

No. The powder coat colour is the only published difference between 2400-R and 2400-B. Same tubing, same machined mounts, same three piece layout, same weld points.

Which UMI warranty applies, the two year policy or the text printed on the instruction sheet?

They are two different documents. UMI's policies page publishes a two year limited warranty to the original purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship, with exclusions for normal wear on bushings and bearings, improper installation, alteration and exceeding the design limits of the part. The disclaimer printed on UMI's installation sheets is narrower and says parts are warranted to be free of defect at the time of purchase, with remedy limited to replacement. Read the policies page as the customer facing warranty and the sheet as the in-box legal notice. Neither one is a Black Ops Auto Works warranty.

Installation Instructions

  1. Set the car on stands with two under each front A-arm and two on the inner frame rails at the rear. UMI's instruction is explicit: do not place jack stands under rear axle. Skip this step and the next one on a drive-on lift.
  2. Jack the rear end up until the lower control arms sit close to parallel with the ground.
  3. Take the lower control arm front bolts out using a pair of 18 mm wrenches.
  4. Slide the one piece driver side connector, piece A, into place with its U-shaped section over the rear lower control arm mount and the rear mounting point outboard of the subframe and control arm mount.
  5. Run the supplied bolt through the connector, the subframe and the control arm, and leave the nut finger tight. Do the same on the passenger side with piece B and leave piece C aside.
  6. Push the connectors up flush, mark where they contact the body, then take them back off and strip paint and rust from the connector and the vehicle subframe at every weld area.
  7. Put the car back on its wheels before welding. UMI requires the suspension to be completely loaded and level, with the rear tires on blocks or ramps taking the full weight of the car.
  8. Refit the connectors and lay a bead around both front mounting points and both sides of the rear mounting point, then repeat on the other side.
  9. Slot piece C in above the passenger side exhaust, leaving about 1/2 inch of clearance to the top of a stock system.
  10. Mark, clean and weld piece C, then coat every weld with rust preventive paint.
  11. Drop the car to ride height and pull the lower control arm mounts up so the bushings compress. UMI notes that as much as 72 ft-lb may be necessary on the front control arm bolts to achieve that.

Reproduced from UMI's installation sheet for part 2400. Vehicles suspension MUST be loaded while welding. UMI recommends the installation be performed by a trained automotive technician with welding experience only, asks you not to attempt it if you feel you are not capable of completing it, and states that UMI Performance Incorporated is not responsible for incorrect installation of this product. The same sheet prints UMI's in-box disclaimer, warranting parts to be free of defect at the time of purchase, disclaiming other express and implied warranties, and limiting remedy to replacement of parts.
