Bright Red UMI 35mm Solid Chromoly Front Sway Bar Kit for the 1982-1992 Camaro and Firebird
Third generation front ends roll on soft factory bars, and this is UMI's answer: a solid 4140 chromoly bar measuring 1-3/8 inches across, finished in bright red powder coat, arriving with the relocation brackets, poly bushings, zinc plated clamshells, heavy duty end links and hardware needed to fit it in the stock location.

Third generation only. There is no published 1993-2002 application for this bar.
The U-shaped spacers are used only when a front wonder bar is fitted: single spacer on the driver side bracket, double on the passenger side. Supplied spacers are 3/16 inch, matching UMI's 2030 wonder bar; a different thickness bar needs washers to make up the difference, and those are not supplied.
The kit is not a single colour. The bar is bright red powder coat, while UMI specifies the relocation brackets as black powder coated and the spacers as black zinc.

FAQ
What makes this different from the tubular front bars?This one is solid rather than hollow, and it is 4140 chromoly. It also comes with relocation brackets, which the tubular bars do not, and it fits third generation cars rather than fourth.
Is the rigidity claim quantified?Yes. UMI publishes 22 percent more rigid than the hollow 36mm 1LE front sway bar.
Will it fit a 1995 Camaro?No. The published application is 1982-1992 only. Fourth generation cars use a different front bar.
What torque does UMI specify?40 ft-lb for the relocation bracket bolts, whether or not a wonder bar is fitted, and 40 ft-lb for the clamshell M10 flange nuts on the studs.
When are the spacers used?Only on cars with a front wonder bar. On a car without one, the spacers stay in the box.
Do the poly bushings get greased?UMI advises lightly greasing the inside of the poly sway bar bushings before installing them. The end link bushings are a separate set and must not be greased.
Is Loctite included?No. UMI calls for a small amount of blue Loctite on the studs and states it is not supplied.
Which strut setups is it compatible with?UMI states compatibility with a variety of strut options including adjustable styles, and documents an install path for cars fitted with a front wonder bar.
Is the bar red all over?The bar is bright red powder coat. UMI specifies the relocation brackets as black powder coated and the spacers as black zinc, so the assembled kit mixes finishes.
What is the warranty situation?UMI's site publishes a two-year warranty for the original purchaser, while the installation sheet in the box prints a disclaimer of warranty limiting coverage to part replacement. Those two UMI documents disagree, so check with UMI before relying on either.
Can I run a rear bar with it?UMI's 22mm tubular rear bar spans 1982-2002 and therefore overlaps this bar only in 1982-1992. Scope any front and rear pairing to those years, and note the 93-02 front and rear kit does not fit this car.
How many people does the install need?UMI recommends a second person, along with a floor jack and two jack stands or a lift and common hand tools.
Installation Instructions
- Raise the front of the car until both front wheels are off the ground and set it securely on jack stands; UMI recommends a second person for this job.
- Take the old end links off first, then the chassis clamshells, and remove the factory bar; cutting the old links off is acceptable since new ones are supplied.
- Remove the bolts identified in figure 1 of UMI's sheet and expect the factory bracket to shift slightly.
- On a car without a wonder bar, fit the black relocation brackets to the factory sway bar mounting pad with the counterbored holes visible from below and the threaded holes offset forward, then start the M10 x 30mm button heads in the counterbored holes and the M10 x 35mm flange head bolts in the holes emptied in the previous step; the U-shaped spacers are not used.
- On a car with a wonder bar, sandwich the wonder bar between the relocation bracket and the chassis, start the same fasteners loosely, then fit the single U-shaped spacer under the driver side bracket and the double spacer under the passenger side.
- Torque the relocation bracket bolts to 40 ft-lb.
- Thread the supplied studs into the bracket holes with a little blue Loctite, short side into the bracket, hand tight only.
- Grease the inside of the poly bushings lightly, slide them onto the bar, offer the bar up, fit the clamshells over the studs and start the four M10 flange nuts.
- Centre the bar side to side and torque the clamshell nuts to 40 ft-lb.
- Assemble the end links loosely in UMI's published order: bolt, washer, bushing, sway bar, bushing, washer, sleeve, washer, bushing, A-arm, bushing, washer, nut.
- Assemble each end link with the washers cupping toward the bushings and the bushing nipple centering the stack in the sway bar and control arm mounting points.
- Lower the car so it sits at ride height on all four tires before the end links are tightened, because UMI states the vehicle weight must be on the sway bar to prevent bushing bind.
- Using a 9/16 inch wrench and ratchet, tighten each end link only until the bushings start to bulge slightly, and do not grease or over tighten the end link bushings.
- Turn the steering wheel lock to lock and check clearance around the brake lines, tie rods and control arms before driving.
Procedure and torque values come from UMI's own Item 2117 installation sheet, a UMI-authored document served from a retailer's static PDF host rather than from UMI's own website. That same sheet prints a disclaimer of warranty which differs from the warranty published on UMI's website; both are set out in the specification table and neither is adopted as this store's terms.
