Installation Instructions

1. Safely raise and support the vehicle. Drain differential fluid from the GM 8.5in housing.
2. Remove the differential cover. Remove carrier bearing caps, marking them for reassembly in their original positions.
3. Remove the differential carrier from the housing.
4. Press off original carrier bearings. Install new Timken carrier bearings from the CK GM8.5 using a press.
5. Install new carrier bearing races from the CK GM8.5 into the housing bores, fully seated.
6. Install the carrier into the housing. Use the shim kit from the CK GM8.5 to adjust backlash to manufacturer specification.
7. Verify gear contact pattern with marking compound. Adjust shims as needed.
8. Reinstall bearing caps in original positions and torque to specification.
9. Replace the pinion seal using the new seal from the CK GM8.5. Reinstall pinion flange and torque to specification.
10. Reinstall differential cover with new gasket or RTV. Fill with correct GM-spec differential fluid to the proper level. Lower vehicle.
