The YGLD44-4-30 is the Yukon Gear Grizzly Locker engineered as a direct carrier replacement for Dana Spicer 44 differentials running 30 spline axles and gear ratios of 3.92 and numerically higher. Built for Jeep Wrangler, Cherokee, and a wide range of American trucks and SUVs that use the Dana 44 axle, YGLD44-4-30 transforms the open rear differential into a full mechanical positive-locking unit. The Grizzly Locker locks under power to deliver 100% torque to both drive wheels, then automatically disengages during cornering to allow normal turning behavior. My Dana 44 uses 3/8-inch ring gear bolts. Can I still install YGLD44-4-30?
Yes, but you will need to purchase 10 spacers (Yukon part YSPBLT-027) to adapt the 3/8-inch bolt pattern to the Grizzly Locker's 7/16-inch drilled case. This is a common fitment note for older Dana 44 applications.

Is YGLD44-4-30 compatible with early tapered axle Dana 44 setups?
No. This locker will not work with early tapered axle designs that used an axle spacer button. Verify your axle design before ordering.

What gear ratios are compatible with YGLD44-4-30?
This locker is designed for 3.92 and up gear ratios. For Dana 44 applications with 3.73 and down ratios, Yukon offers the YGLD44-3-30 variant.

Does the Grizzly Locker make noise during turns?
The Grizzly Locker, like all automatic mechanical lockers, may produce a clicking sound during low-speed cornering as it ratchets to allow wheel speed differential. This is normal operation and not indicative of a problem.

Installation Instructions

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the differential gear oil from the Dana 44 housing.
  2. Remove the differential cover and gasket. Clean the housing flange thoroughly.
  3. Mark bearing caps before removal so they are reinstalled in the exact same position and orientation.
  4. Remove bearing cap bolts and extract the factory carrier with bearing races and shims. Keep left and right side shim stacks labeled.
  5. Remove the ring gear from the factory carrier and inspect gear teeth and ring gear bolts for condition.
  6. If existing ring gear bolts are 3/8-inch, install 10 YSPBLT-027 spacers into the ring gear bolt holes of the YGLD44-4-30 carrier.
  7. Mount the ring gear onto the YGLD44-4-30 carrier. Apply thread-lock compound and torque ring gear bolts to Dana 44 specification (typically 55 to 70 ft-lb).
  8. Press original carrier bearings onto the Grizzly Locker hubs, or install new bearings if replacing.
  9. Set the assembly into the housing with original shim packs. Install bearing caps in marked positions.
  10. Check and adjust ring gear backlash (typically 0.005 to 0.009 in for Dana 44) and carrier bearing preload.
  11. Verify gear contact pattern with marking compound.
  12. Torque bearing cap bolts to Dana 44 specification (typically 40 to 55 ft-lb).
  13. Install a new cover gasket and cover. Fill with GL-5 gear oil to the proper level.
  14. Road test and allow a break-in period of at least 500 miles before severe trail use.
