Yukon Gear DuraGrip Limited Slip for Dana 44 with 30 Spline Axles and 3.92 and Up Ratios
Trail-built Jeeps, classic off-road trucks, and serious four-wheel drive rigs running 3.92 or higher gear ratios in their Dana 44 axles deserve a limited slip that can keep pace with the rest of the build. The YDGD44-4-30-1 Yukon Gear DuraGrip is the wide-spread carrier version for Dana Spicer 44 differentials equipped with 30-spline axle shafts and 3.92 and numerically higher gear ratios. Part number YDGD44-4-30-1 is frequently used in Jeep CJ, Cherokee, Wagoneer, and TJ/LJ applications where re-gearing to 4.10 or higher ratios demands the wide-spread carrier. The YDGD44-4-30-1 features forged 4320 chromoly spider gears, a nodular iron carrier case, and composite clutch packs for consistent, predictable limited slip behavior on the trail and on the street. Note that this unit is also double-drilled for 7/16 inch and 1/2 inch ring gear bolts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does YDGD44-4-30-1 only fit 3.92 and higher ratios?
The Dana 44 uses two carrier spread configurations. Gear ratios of 3.73 and lower use the narrow-spread carrier. Ratios of 3.92 and higher (4.10, 4.56, 4.88) require the wide-spread carrier. The YDGD44-4-30-1 is specifically the wide-spread version for this application.
Does YDGD44-4-30-1 fit the Jeep TJ Rubicon with 4.10 factory gears?
Yes. The Jeep Wrangler TJ Rubicon (2003 through 2006) came factory with 4.10 gears in the Dana 44 rear axle, which requires the wide-spread carrier. The YDGD44-4-30-1 is the correct unit for this application.
Can I use YDGD44-4-30-1 if I re-geared to 4.88?
Yes. The YDGD44-4-30-1 is compatible with 3.92, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, and other numerically higher ratios in the Dana 44 wide-spread carrier configuration.
Does this unit fit both front and rear Dana 44 axles?
Yes, provided both axles use 30-spline shafts and 3.92 or higher gear ratios. Some front Dana 44 IFS applications may require the optional YSPSPR-001 spring kit for IFS fitment.
What ring gear bolt sizes does YDGD44-4-30-1 accept?
The carrier is double-drilled for 7/16 inch and 1/2 inch ring gear bolts. If your application uses 3/8 inch bolts, purchase YSPBLT-027 spacers (sold separately) to ensure proper seating.
What gear oil does Yukon Gear recommend for YDGD44-4-30-1?
Yukon recommends high-grade non-synthetic GL-5 gear oil with Yukon LSD additive (part number OILADD). Synthetic oil is not recommended and may result in aggressive or noisy clutch engagement.
Does the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protect my vehicle after installing YDGD44-4-30-1?
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, installing the YDGD44-4-30-1 cannot automatically void your vehicle warranty. Any warranty denial must be based on specific proof that this part caused the failure in question.
Is the YDGD44-4-30-1 rebuildable?
Yes. The DuraGrip platform is fully rebuildable. Replacement clutch packs and spring sets are sold separately so you can service the unit when clutch material wears over time.
Installation Instructions
- Raise and support vehicle. Drain differential and remove cover, driveshaft, and axle shafts.
- Mark bearing caps for reinstallation position, then remove them.
- Extract the old carrier with side bearing shims. Keep shims organized by side.
- Transfer ring gear to YDGD44-4-30-1. Torque ring gear bolts to approximately 55 to 65 ft-lb for Dana 44 (use correct bolt size for your application).
- Press side bearings onto the new carrier. Reinstall using original shims as starting point.
- Check backlash with a dial indicator; target is 0.005 to 0.010 inch for Dana 44.
- Verify gear contact pattern with marking compound and adjust shims as needed.
- Torque bearing caps to specification. Clean cover sealing surface and reinstall cover with RTV or new gasket.
- Fill with non-synthetic GL-5 gear oil and Yukon LSD additive to the correct level.
- Reinstall axle shafts and driveshaft. Verify all fastener torques and test drive for 500 mile break-in.

Differentials
Differentials distribute engine torque between drive wheels, allowing them to rotate at different speeds through corners while maintaining traction. Upgrading from a factory open differential to a limited-slip or locking differential is one of the most impactful drivetrain improvements you can make for towing, off-roading, drag racing, or any application where both wheels need to work together under load.Popular Differential UpgradesTop upgrades include Eaton Detroit Locker and Eaton Truetrac limited-slip units for GM, Ford, Dana, and Chrysler axles, ARB Air Lockers for Jeep and truck off-road applications, and OS Giken Super Lock LSD units for JDM performance platforms. Locker conversions for Dana 44 and Dana 60 front axles are essential for serious rock crawling, while Truetrac helical LSDs deliver traction improvements without aggressive locking behavior for street and tow applications. What is the difference between a locker and a limited-slip differential?A locking differential ...
