The YDGF8.8-28-1 fits 1979 through approximately 2004 Ford Mustang with the 8.8 inch rear axle and 28-spline axle shafts. It will not fit the 1999 through 2004 SVT Cobra which has an independent rear suspension.

What is the difference between 28-spline and 31-spline Ford 8.8?
28-spline axles are found in lighter-duty applications like Mustang and Ranger. 31-spline axles are found in heavier trucks and SUVs like F-150, Expedition, and Explorer. For 31-spline applications, use YDGF8.8-31-1.

Does YDGF8.8-28-1 replace the Trac-Lok?
Yes. The YDGF8.8-28-1 is a direct replacement for the factory Ford Trac-Lok limited slip unit and open differential carriers in Ford 8.8 inch axles with 28-spline shafts.

What gear oil is required after installation?

Is YDGF8.8-28-1 street legal and emissions compliant?
Yes. The YDGF8.8-28-1 is an internal drivetrain component with no effect on vehicle emissions. It is legal for street use in all 50 states.

Does the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protect me after this installation?
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, aftermarket component installation such as YDGF8.8-28-1 cannot be used by a dealer to blanket-void your vehicle warranty. Specific failure causation must be proven.

What if my Ford 8.8 has a Traction-Lok service kit installed?
If a factory clutch pack rebuild kit was recently installed in your existing carrier, it may extend its service life. However, the YDGF8.8-28-1 is a new complete carrier and represents a more comprehensive upgrade than a rebuild kit for the old carrier.

Installation Instructions

  1. Drain the differential and remove the cover, driveshaft, and axle shafts.
  2. Mark and remove bearing caps. Extract the existing carrier and set aside shims by side.
  3. Transfer the ring gear to the new YDGF8.8-28-1 carrier. Torque ring gear bolts to approximately 70 to 80 ft-lb.
  4. Press new side bearings onto the carrier if required.
  5. Reinstall carrier with original shims. Check backlash with a dial indicator (target 0.008 to 0.015 inch for Ford 8.8).
  6. Verify carrier bearing preload and gear tooth contact pattern.
  7. Install bearing caps to their original sides and torque to specification.
  8. Clean cover mating surface. Install cover with RTV. Fill with GL-5 gear oil and LSD additive.
  9. Reinstall axle shafts and driveshaft. Verify all torques.
  10. Road test for noise and recheck fluid level after 100 miles.
