Part number YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 covers an extremely wide range of applications spanning from early 1980s C/K pickups and Blazers through Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado 1500, Avalanche, Escalade, and Colorado applications through approximately 2017. The YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 is designed for any gear ratio of 2.73 and higher, working within the standard-spread carrier configuration. Built with forged 4320 chromoly spider gears and composite clutch packs inside a nodular iron housing, the YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 provides smooth, progressive limited slip action that improves traction on snow, mud, and uneven terrain without the harshness of a mechanical locker.

Yes. The YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 is cross-compatible with both the GM 8.5 inch (used through approximately 1998) and the revised GM 8.6 inch (1999 and newer in full-size trucks and SUVs), provided the vehicle has 30-spline axle shafts.

How do I know if my truck has 28-spline or 30-spline axles?
Generally, 28-spline axles are found in older and lighter-duty GM 8.5 inch applications. Full-size 1500 trucks and SUVs from the late 1980s onward and essentially all 8.6 inch applications use 30-spline shafts. Count the splines on the axle shaft to confirm.

What carrier bearings are required for YDGGM8.5-3-30-1?
For the 8.5 inch housing, use carrier bearing LM102949 and race LM102911. For the 8.6 inch housing, use bearing LM603049 and race LM603012. The two housings have different race outer diameters (2.891 inch for 8.5, 3.062 inch for 8.6).

Does YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 work with the factory Eaton Gov-Lok?
The YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 is a direct replacement for the factory Eaton Gov-Lok or Auburn-type limited slip in this axle. It provides superior and more consistent traction control compared to the governor-controlled factory unit.

What gear oil and additive does this unit require?

Is the YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 compatible with my Chevy Silverado's factory electronic stability control?
Yes. A mechanical limited slip differential does not interfere with ESC, ABS, or traction control systems. The electronic systems operate via wheel speed sensors and can continue functioning normally with the YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 installed.

Does the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protect my Silverado after this modification?
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, installing YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 cannot be cited by a dealer as a blanket reason to void your vehicle warranty. The dealer must prove a direct causal relationship between this part and any specific failure to deny a warranty claim.

How many miles should I wait before switching to synthetic oil after installation?
Yukon Gear recommends against synthetic oil in DuraGrip units. If you choose to switch to synthetic after break-in, wait at least 500 miles and be aware that some clutch noise may occur.

Installation Instructions

  1. Drain differential. Remove cover, driveshaft, and axle shafts.
  2. Mark and remove bearing caps. Extract carrier with side bearing shims.
  3. Press appropriate carrier bearings onto the YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 (see spec table for 8.5 vs 8.6 bearing part numbers).
  4. Transfer ring gear from old carrier. Torque ring gear bolts to spec (approximately 65 ft-lb for GM 8.5/8.6).
  5. Reinstall carrier with original shims. Check backlash with dial indicator (0.005 to 0.010 inch target).
  6. Verify carrier preload and contact pattern with gear marking compound.
  7. Torque bearing caps, reinstall cover with RTV, and fill with GL-5 oil plus LSD additive.
  8. Reinstall axle shafts and driveshaft. Confirm all fastener torques.
  9. Break in with 500 miles of light duty driving before towing or off-road use.
  10. Recheck fluid level and inspect for leaks at 500 miles.
