Yukon Gear Grizzly Locker for Toyota 8in 4-Cylinder Rear Differential with 30 Spline Axles

The YGLT8-30 is the Yukon Gear Grizzly Locker designed for the Toyota 8-inch rear differential found in 4-cylinder-powered Toyota Pickup and 4Runner models from 1979 through 1995. Built as a direct carrier replacement, YGLT8-30 transforms the open factory differential into a full mechanical positive-locking unit that delivers 100% torque to both rear wheels under power, then automatically disengages during turns to allow normal cornering. Whether the application is rock crawling, sand running, trail work, or drag racing, the Grizzly Locker offers a patented tooth design with 8620 alloy internals for maximum strength. Compatible with all gear ratios in the Toyota 8-inch 4-cylinder housing, YGLT8-30 is assembled in the USA and backed by Yukon's industry-leading warranty program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Toyota vehicles does YGLT8-30 fit?
The YGLT8-30 fits 1979 through 1995 Toyota Pickup and 1984 through 1995 Toyota 4Runner models equipped with the Toyota 8-inch rear differential and 4-cylinder engine. This is a separate housing from the Toyota V6 8-inch differential, which requires a different part number (YGLTV6-30).

Does YGLT8-30 work with any gear ratio?
Yes, the YGLT8-30 is compatible with all gear ratios in the Toyota 8-inch 4-cylinder rear differential, including stock ratios and aftermarket regears.

What is a Grizzly Locker and how is it different from an LSD?
The YGLT8-30 is a mechanical automatic locker that locks both rear axles together under power, delivering 100% of available torque to both rear wheels simultaneously. A limited-slip differential (LSD) uses clutch packs or Torsen gearing to bias torque, allowing some wheel speed differential. The locker provides maximum traction for off-road and drag racing; the LSD is more comfortable for street use.

Can I use YGLT8-30 in my daily-driven Toyota Pickup on the street?
Yes. The Grizzly Locker automatically disengages during turns, making it more compatible with street driving than a spool or locked differential. Some tire scrub during low-speed turns and mild steering pull on dry pavement is expected, which is normal for all automatic lockers.

Will YGLT8-30 fit a Toyota V6-powered Pickup or 4Runner?
No. The YGLT8-30 is designed specifically for the 4-cylinder Toyota 8-inch rear differential. For V6-powered Toyota Pickup and 4Runner applications, use the Yukon YGLTV6-30 instead.

Does installing YGLT8-30 affect my vehicle warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act?
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, your vehicle manufacturer cannot void your warranty solely because of an aftermarket carrier installation. They would need to demonstrate that the YGLT8-30 specifically caused any warranty claim filed. Consult your dealer or a legal advisor for your specific situation.

Do I need to change my gear oil after installing the Grizzly Locker?
Drain and refill with fresh GL-5 gear oil during installation. No friction modifier is required since the Grizzly Locker is a mechanical locker without clutch packs. Change the oil again after the first 500 miles to remove any break-in debris.

What is the warranty on YGLT8-30?
The YGLT8-30 carries a 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. Yukon also offers an extended lifetime warranty option for additional coverage. Review the full warranty terms at yukongear.com.

Installation Instructions

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jack stands. Drain the Toyota 8-inch rear differential gear oil.
  2. Remove the rear axle shafts from both sides of the housing.
  3. Remove the differential cover and gasket. Clean the housing mating surface.
  4. Mark the bearing caps for exact reinstallation in original position and orientation.
  5. Remove the bearing cap bolts and carefully extract the factory open carrier assembly with bearings and shims. Keep left and right shim stacks labeled.
  6. Remove the ring gear from the factory carrier. Inspect gear teeth and ring gear bolts for wear.
  7. Install the ring gear onto the YGLT8-30 Grizzly Locker carrier using new or inspected ring gear bolts with thread-lock compound. Torque to Toyota 8-inch specification (typically 50 to 65 ft-lb).
  8. Press original carrier bearings onto the Grizzly Locker bearing hubs, or install new carrier bearings.
  9. Set the assembly into the housing with the original shim stacks. Reinstall bearing caps in marked positions.
  10. Check and adjust ring gear backlash (typically 0.005 to 0.009 in for Toyota 8-inch) and carrier bearing preload.
  11. Verify gear contact pattern using marking compound.
  12. Torque bearing cap bolts to Toyota specification. Install a new cover gasket and cover.
  13. Reinstall the axle shafts with new seals if required. Fill with GL-5 gear oil to the proper level.
  14. Road test and perform a 500-mile break-in before extreme off-road use. Change the gear oil after the break-in period.

Differentials

Differentials

Differentials distribute engine torque between drive wheels, allowing them to rotate at different speeds through corners while maintaining traction. Upgrading from a factory open differential to a limited-slip or locking differential is one of the most impactful drivetrain improvements you can make for towing, off-roading, drag racing, or any application where both wheels need to work together under load.Popular Differential UpgradesTop upgrades include Eaton Detroit Locker and Eaton Truetrac limited-slip units for GM, Ford, Dana, and Chrysler axles, ARB Air Lockers for Jeep and truck off-road applications, and OS Giken Super Lock LSD units for JDM performance platforms. Locker conversions for Dana 44 and Dana 60 front axles are essential for serious rock crawling, while Truetrac helical LSDs deliver traction improvements without aggressive locking behavior for street and tow applications. What is the difference between a locker and a limited-slip differential?A locking differential ...
