Yukon Gear High Performance Ring and Pinion Gear Set for Dana 30 JK Short Reverse Pinion in a 5.13 Ratio
The YG D30SR-513JK delivers a 5.13 gear ratio for the Dana 30 JK short reverse pinion front differential, targeting Jeep Wrangler JK builds running oversized 37-inch to 40-inch tire packages. When larger tires dramatically increase rotating mass and reduce effective gear reduction, a deep 5.13 ratio re-gear using YG D30SR-513JK recovers the power, throttle response, and off-road crawl ratio that the factory gearing simply cannot sustain. Manufactured from 8620 case-hardened alloy steel and finished with Yukon's REM isotropic superfinishing process, YG D30SR-513JK is engineered for quiet operation and exceptional durability in the most demanding trail conditions. Sold as a matched set for guaranteed contact pattern compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing YG D30SR-513JK affect my factory warranty?
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, your factory warranty cannot be voided solely because of an aftermarket installation. The manufacturer must prove the specific part caused the failure.
Why would I choose 5.13 gearing over 4.88 for a JK?
A 5.13 ratio is typically reserved for builds running 37-inch to 40-inch tires, or for JKs also fitted with armor and heavy accessories. It provides more crawl torque in low range and better highway cruising RPM with extreme tire sizes compared to 4.88.
Is the Dana 30 strong enough to handle extreme tire sizes with 5.13 gearing?
The Dana 30 is the limiting factor in most JK front axle builds. While YG D30SR-513JK maximizes the performance of the stock Dana 30, many builders who run 37-inch-plus tires choose to upgrade to a Dana 44 front axle for added strength alongside the re-gear.
Do I need to re-gear the rear at the same time?
Yes. Both front and rear differentials must be set to the same ratio. For the JK, the rear Dana 44 must also receive a 5.13 ratio re-gear to prevent binding and drivetrain damage in 4WD mode.
What transfer case output ratio does a 5.13 re-gear create in low range?
The JK Rubicon transfer case provides a 4.0:1 low range. Combined with 5.13 axle gearing, the effective crawl ratio becomes approximately 73:1, which is exceptional for technical rock crawling.
What install kit is recommended with YG D30SR-513JK?
A complete Yukon Gear Dana 30 JK master overhaul install kit provides all bearings, seals, crush sleeve, and shims needed for a proper installation. Using a full kit avoids reusing any worn hardware.
Will the REM finish make the gears quieter than my stock gears?
Yes. The REM isotropic superfinishing process used on YG D30SR-513JK creates a surface finish that is measurably smoother than standard-ground gears, resulting in noticeably quieter and cooler operation under load.
What warranty covers YG D30SR-513JK?
Yukon Gear provides a manufacturer limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Professional installation is required to maintain coverage.
Installation Instructions
- Lift and support the vehicle safely. Drain the front differential completely.
- Remove the front driveshaft and disconnect front axle shafts as required.
- Remove the differential cover and clean all mating surfaces.
- Mark and remove carrier bearing caps. Record shim positions carefully.
- Remove the carrier assembly from the housing.
- Remove the pinion nut, companion flange, and extract the old pinion. Press off races.
- Install new pinion bearing races from the overhaul kit.
- Determine correct pinion depth using a Dana 30 JK setup tool. Shim to specification.
- Install new inner pinion bearing on the YG D30SR-513JK pinion. Install pinion with a new crush sleeve.
- Set pinion bearing preload to factory specification by incrementally tightening the pinion nut.
- Press the YG D30SR-513JK ring gear onto the carrier. Torque ring gear bolts to spec.
- Install carrier with new bearings and set backlash to 0.005 to 0.009 inch with shims.
- Verify gear contact pattern with marking compound. Correct pattern with pinion depth or backlash adjustments.
- Torque bearing caps. Install cover with new sealant and torque to factory spec.
- Reinstall axle shafts, driveshaft, and fill with correct gear oil. Road-test and check for leaks.

Final Drive Gears
Final drive gears determine the overall multiplication ratio between the engine and the driven wheels, with the ring and pinion gear set inside the differential carrier providing the final stage of ratio reduction that translates transmission output into the torque and speed delivered to the axle shafts. Changing the final drive ratio is one of the most effective ways to tailor a vehicle's character for a specific purpose, with numerically higher ratios improving acceleration and towing torque at the cost of higher RPM at cruising speeds, while numerically lower ratios reduce cruise RPM and improve fuel economy at the cost of off-the-line acceleration. Performance builders choose gear ratios based on the engine's power band, the transmission's gear spacing, tire diameter, and the primary intended use whether that is drag racing, road course, towing, or overland travel. This collection covers ring and pinion gear sets for domestic trucks, muscle cars, and import performance applicati...
