Yukon Gear High Performance Ring and Pinion Gear Set for AMC Model 35 in a 4.11 Ratio
The YG M35-411 is a high-performance ring and pinion gear set manufactured for the AMC Model 35 rear differential, one of the most widely used compact rear axles in Jeep, AMC, and Ford applications. With a 4.11 gear ratio, YG M35-411 is the go-to upgrade for Jeep Wrangler TJ/YJ and Cherokee XJ owners stepping up to 31-inch to 33-inch tires, delivering improved acceleration, off-road torque, and restored fuel economy. Built from 8620 case-hardened alloy steel and finished with Yukon's REM isotropic superfinishing process, YG M35-411 produces quieter, cooler, and longer-lasting gear operation compared to conventionally finished gears. The matched ring and pinion set ensures proper backlash and contact pattern right out of the box.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will installing YG M35-411 void my factory warranty?
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents blanket warranty denials based solely on aftermarket parts. The manufacturer must demonstrate that the specific part you installed caused the failure being claimed.
What tire size pairs best with a 4.11 ratio in the AMC Model 35?
A 4.11 ratio works well with 31-inch to 33-inch tires on Jeep TJ, YJ, and XJ applications. For 35-inch or larger tires, a numerically higher ratio such as 4.56 or 4.88 is typically recommended for better drivability.
Is the Model 35 strong enough for off-road use after re-gearing?
The AMC Model 35 is a capable rear axle for moderate off-road use. Re-gearing with YG M35-411 does not change its inherent strength limits. Owners who run large tires and heavy lockers on demanding trails often upgrade to a Dana 44 rear for added durability.
Do I need to re-gear my front axle at the same time?
Yes. Both front and rear differentials must run the same gear ratio when using 4WD. Mismatched ratios will cause drivetrain binding, heat, and premature component wear.
Can I install YG M35-411 without a press?
No. Proper ring and pinion installation requires a hydraulic bearing press, dial indicator, depth gauge tools, and pattern compound. This is not a job for hand tools alone. Professional installation is required.
What fluid does the AMC Model 35 use?
Use 75W-90 or 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil. Change the fluid at the first 500 miles after re-gearing to flush any metal break-in particles, then follow normal service intervals thereafter.
How does the AMC Model 35 compare to the Dana 35?
The AMC Model 35 and the Dana 35 are the same axle. AMC and Jeep used both names interchangeably. YG M35-411 fits both.
What warranty comes with YG M35-411?
Yukon Gear provides a manufacturer limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Installation must be performed by a qualified technician following the instructions included with the gear set.
Installation Instructions
- Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the rear differential oil completely.
- Remove the rear axle shafts by unbolting the retainer flanges.
- Remove the differential cover and clean the housing mating surface.
- Mark and remove the carrier bearing caps. Record shim thickness and positions.
- Remove the carrier and ring gear assembly from the housing.
- Remove the pinion nut and extract the old pinion using appropriate press tools. Press off bearing races.
- Install new pinion bearing races into the housing using a race driver.
- Set pinion depth using an AMC Model 35 setup gauge and shims.
- Install new inner bearing on the YG M35-411 pinion gear. Install with a new crush sleeve.
- Torque the pinion nut incrementally until correct pinion bearing preload is achieved.
- Press the YG M35-411 ring gear onto the carrier. Torque ring gear bolts to AMC/Dana specification.
- Install the carrier with new carrier bearings and set backlash to 0.005 to 0.009 inch.
- Verify gear contact pattern with marking compound. Adjust shims as needed for correct pattern.
- Torque bearing caps. Install the cover with new sealant and torque to spec.
- Reinstall axle shafts and fill with correct gear oil. Road-test and check for leaks.

Final Drive Gears
Final drive gears determine the overall multiplication ratio between the engine and the driven wheels, with the ring and pinion gear set inside the differential carrier providing the final stage of ratio reduction that translates transmission output into the torque and speed delivered to the axle shafts. Changing the final drive ratio is one of the most effective ways to tailor a vehicle's character for a specific purpose, with numerically higher ratios improving acceleration and towing torque at the cost of higher RPM at cruising speeds, while numerically lower ratios reduce cruise RPM and improve fuel economy at the cost of off-the-line acceleration. Performance builders choose gear ratios based on the engine's power band, the transmission's gear spacing, tire diameter, and the primary intended use whether that is drag racing, road course, towing, or overland travel. This collection covers ring and pinion gear sets for domestic trucks, muscle cars, and import performance applicati...
