Installation Instructions

  1. Drain the differential and remove the cover. Mark the carrier bearing caps for correct reassembly.
  2. Remove the carrier bearing caps and carefully extract the ring-gear carrier from the housing.
  3. Remove the existing carrier shims from both sides of the carrier bearing bores.
  4. Install the carrier with the ring gear back into the housing with no shims to determine the required shim thickness on each side.
  5. Using a dial indicator, measure the ring-gear backlash and calculate the required shim adjustment for each side.
  6. Select the appropriate shims from the SK 30214 kit for each side to achieve the specified backlash and carrier bearing preload.
  7. Install the selected shims, reinstall the carrier, and torque the bearing caps hand-tight.
  8. Verify backlash at 3-4 points around the ring gear with a dial indicator, and adjust as needed.
  9. Check the gear tooth contact pattern with marking compound, then torque bearing caps to final specification.
  10. Install the cover with a new gasket or RTV, fill with the correct differential fluid, and road-test before returning to service.
