Direct-Fit Right Hand Axle Shaft for the Ford 8.8in Rear Axle on 1997 to 2004 F-150 Trucks

The ZA F880033 from USA Standard Gear is a direct-fit replacement rear axle shaft engineered specifically for the Ford 8.8in semi-floating rear axle used in 1997 through 2004 Ford F-150 trucks. This is the Right Hand Side shaft. Manufactured from 1541H alloy steel, the ZA F880033 delivers the toughness and dimensional accuracy required for long-term reliability in a working truck application. Every shaft is produced to match original equipment geometry so you get a clean bolt-in installation without machining or modification.

At 31 7/8 inches (31.87 inches) in length and machined to a 31-spline count, this shaft restores proper power delivery from the differential to the wheel flange. The 5-lug wheel flange is double-drilled to accept both 0.563-inch and 0.606-inch stud holes, preserving compatibility with the factory wheel bolt pattern of 5 x 135mm. The bearing journal is finished to 1.620 inches for precise axle bearing fit.

USA Standard Gear backs the ZA F880033 with a 10-year limited warranty against manufacturer defects, giving you lasting confidence in the quality of this repair.

Why Choose USA Standard Gear

USA Standard Gear is a division of Yukon Gear and Axle, one of the most recognized names in drivetrain components. The brand focuses on delivering OEM-quality fit and finish at a value that makes sense for everyday repairs. Every axle shaft in the USA Standard line is produced from high-quality alloy steel and held to strict dimensional tolerances so installation goes smoothly and the part performs reliably over the long term.

The 1541H alloy steel used in this shaft provides higher tensile and fatigue strength compared to plain carbon steel, making it well suited for the demands of a half-ton truck axle that sees daily driving, occasional towing, and light off-road use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles does this axle shaft fit?
This shaft fits 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with the 8.8in semi-floating rear axle. Always verify your axle ratio tag and axle tube diameter before ordering.

Is this the left side or right side axle shaft?
The ZA F880033 is the Right Hand Side shaft. If you need the left side, search for the corresponding left-hand part number for the Ford 8.8in application.

Does this shaft come with an ABS tone ring?
No. This shaft does not include an ABS ring. If your F-150 is equipped with ABS, transfer the existing tone ring from your old shaft or source a replacement ring separately.

What is the spline count on this shaft?
This shaft is machined to a 31-spline count, which is the correct specification for the Ford 8.8in semi-floating rear axle used in 1997 to 2004 F-150 trucks.

What material is this shaft made from?
This shaft is produced from 1541H alloy steel. This material offers improved tensile strength and fatigue resistance compared to standard carbon steel, which is appropriate for truck axle shaft applications.

What bolt pattern does the wheel flange use?
The wheel flange is machined to a 5 x 135mm bolt pattern and is double drilled with both 0.563-inch and 0.606-inch stud holes to maintain compatibility with the factory wheel setup on the 1997 to 2004 F-150.

What warranty does the ZA F880033 carry?
USA Standard Gear provides a 10-year limited warranty against manufacturer defects on this shaft. This warranty is structured in compliance with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which governs written warranties on consumer products in the United States. Retain your purchase receipt for warranty service.

Can I install this shaft at home or does it require a shop?
A capable home mechanic with access to basic axle service tools can install this shaft. It is a direct replacement for the factory unit, so no machining is required. See the installation section below for an overview of the process.

Will this shaft work on an F-150 with a limited-slip or locking differential?
Yes. The shaft is compatible regardless of whether the carrier is open, limited-slip, or locking, because it splines into the side gear of the carrier. Confirm your carrier spline count matches the 31-spline specification before installing.

How do I confirm my F-150 uses the 8.8in axle?
The Ford 8.8in rear axle was standard equipment on most rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive F-150 configurations from 1997 through 2004. Confirm axle identification by reading the tag on the driver-side axle tube near the differential cover, which lists the axle ratio and build date. A differential cover with 10 bolts in a roughly oval pattern is also an identifying feature of the Ford 8.8in.

Installation Instructions

  1. Safely raise and support the vehicle at the rear axle using appropriate jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  2. Remove the rear wheel on the right side.
  3. If equipped with drum brakes, remove the brake drum. If equipped with disc brakes, remove the caliper and rotor, taking care not to stress the brake hose.
  4. Remove the differential cover to drain the gear oil and gain access to the pinion shaft retaining bolt.
  5. Remove the pinion shaft lock bolt and slide out the pinion shaft.
  6. Push the old axle shaft inward slightly to relieve tension on the C-clip, then remove the C-clip from the axle groove inside the differential housing.
  7. Carefully slide the old axle shaft out of the housing, taking care not to damage the axle seal.
  8. Inspect the axle seal and bearing for wear. Replace as needed before installing the new shaft.
  9. Slide the ZA F880033 into the housing, engaging the splines with the side gear. Push the shaft inward until the C-clip groove is visible inside the differential.
  10. Install the C-clip on the shaft groove, then pull the shaft outward until the C-clip seats against the side gear.
  11. Reinstall the pinion shaft and lock bolt, torquing to factory specification.
  12. Reinstall the differential cover with a fresh gasket or RTV sealant, then refill with the appropriate gear oil to the correct level.
  13. Reinstall brakes and wheel, torquing lug nuts to specification.
  14. Lower the vehicle and perform a short test drive, then recheck for any fluid leaks at the differential cover.

Upgrading your axles is one of the highest-impact modifications for trucks and off-road vehicles that regularly see hard launches, deep mud, rock crawling, or towing at the limits. Aftermarket axle shafts are manufactured from higher-grade steel than OEM units, delivering greater torsional strength and resistance to fatigue failures that stock shafts cannot handle under sustained abuse. Popular Upgrades Chromoly front and rear axle shafts are the go-to upgrade for lifted trucks and Jeep builds running larger tires with increased leverage on the driveline. Locking differentials paired with upgraded axles make a complete traction system for serious off-road builds. Heavy-duty CV axles for both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive platforms handle the added stress of lowered suspension geometry and high-horsepower applications. When should I upgrade my axle shafts? Upgrade your axle shafts when adding larger tires, significantly increasing engine power, installing a locking differenti...
