The aFe 420-401001-J CONTROL Johnny O’Connell C5/C6 shock set supplies front and rear dampers tuned for the Corvette’s factory mounting arrangement. It replaces the shocks; it is not a lowering-spring kit. Match the actual factory electronic-shock equipment before installation.
Current exact manufacturer coverage is all 1997–2013 C5/C6 Corvette models. The full selected thirteen-engine-row table supports all ten original named scopes and Grand Sport 2010–2013. Base engine rows combine into the original 1997–2013 Base scope; no trim is invented from an engine designation.

| Damping / mounting design | Johnny O’Connell-tuned replacement dampers with a revised damping curve. aFe describes reduced harsh high-speed ride and increased platform support in transitions, while retaining OE mounting points, travel and durability requirements. These are manufacturer design claims; no measured damping-curve values, lap-time improvement or exact-part dyno/flow certificate is established. |
| Electronic-shock requirement | The selected manufacturer page says SOME vehicles with Mag Ride electronic shocks require an additional 436-401001-N delete kit. That linked module is identified for C6 equipment; do not infer that the same module fits every C5. Confirm the actual factory electronics and connector before choosing a separate module. |
| Selected package and hardware scope | FOUR selected shocks: two front and two rear, as shown in the exact native set image. The exact native image shows the selected front/rear dampers. No formal itemized hardware bill is provided in the own eight-page manual; do not infer every hardware quantity from the photo. Springs, sway bars and electronic-shock delete modules are separate products and are not included. Generic filter/coupler fields on the manufacturer page do not identify shock-set contents. |
| Front installation | Support the car at factory lift points, open the hood and access upper mounts. C5: MOVE the washer bottle and coolant reservoir without completely disconnecting them. C6: MOVE the driver-side coolant reservoir held by two 10mm flange nuts without disconnecting hoses. Remove the 15mm upper shock nut while holding shaft flats with a 6mm wrench; remove front wheels and the two lower bolts. Support the LOWER BALL JOINT with a floor jack, remove FOUR upper-control-arm frame bolts, RECORD any alignment-washer positions, pivot the upper arm and lower the jack to remove the shock. Locate the new lower bolts, raise the lower arm to position the shock, start the upper bushing/washer/nut and RESTORE the upper-arm washers in their original positions. Tighten upper CONTROL-ARM bolts to 48 ft-lb, lower SHOCK mount nuts to 21 ft-lb and upper SHOCK SHAFT nut to 19 ft-lb. Restore engine-bay components and wheels, then lower the vehicle. |
| Rear installation | Support the rear at factory lift points and remove rear wheels. Support the LOWER BALL JOINT with a floor jack. Remove two upper MOUNT-PLATE bolts and the large lower shock bolt; remove upper-control-arm frame fasteners. RECORD any alignment washers on aluminum chassis and restore their exact positions. Pivot the upper arm and lower the jack to remove the shock. Locate the new lower bolt and raise the lower arm. The upper plate WHITE DOT must face FRONT. Tighten plate bolts to 22 ft-lb and the lower shock NUT to 81 ft-lb. Rear upper-CONTROL-ARM bolts: C6 Z06/ZR1 ALUMINUM chassis 48 ft-lb; ALL C5 and STEEL chassis 81 ft-lb. Restore washers, repeat, reinstall wheels and lower the vehicle. |
| Own fastener distinctions | FRONT upper CONTROL-ARM bolts 48 ft-lb, lower SHOCK mount nuts 21 ft-lb, upper SHOCK SHAFT nut 19 ft-lb. REAR upper MOUNT-PLATE bolts 22 ft-lb, lower SHOCK nut 81 ft-lb. Rear upper CONTROL-ARM: C6 Z06/ZR1 aluminum chassis 48 ft-lb; ALL C5/steel chassis 81 ft-lb. These are distinct fasteners, not one universal shock torque. |
| Limits and unprinted values | No spring rate, lowering amount, ride-height adjustment range, external damping-adjuster setting, gas pressure or aircraft-aluminum body specification is established. No numeric wheel torque, fixed recheck mileage, battery-disconnect or coding procedure is printed in the selected shock manual. |
| Own documentation | Selected 420-401001-J: eight-page 00P-0T1002-A manual, revision March 5, 2021; all text, front/rear diagrams and installation steps read/viewed |
| Emissions | Manufacturer states this product does not require a CARB EO number |
