Boxed Rear Lower Control Arms for the 1965-1970 Chevrolet Full-Size B-Body

These boxed rear lower control arms, also called trailing arms, are a direct bolt-in replacement for the stamped factory arms on a 1965-1970 Chevrolet Impala, Bel Air, Biscayne or Caprice. They keep the stock length and stock geometry while removing the flex that the original pressed steel arms develop under load.

Each arm is built from 1/8 inch wall USA rectangular tubing with greaseable polyurethane bushings in DOM bushing holders, reinforced sway bar holes and spring perches with clips that suit either factory or lowering springs. Both arms are identical, so either one fits either side of the car.

Key Features

  • Boxed construction from 1/8 inch wall USA rectangular tubing
  • Direct bolt-in replacement for the stamped factory arms with no modifications
  • Greaseable polyurethane bushings carried in DOM bushing holders
  • Reinforced sway bar holes
  • Spring perches and clips included, suiting factory or lowering springs
  • Interchangeable left to right, which simplifies installation
  • Durable powder coat finish, black on this part number

Fitment

Vehicle Years

Chevrolet Bel Air 1965-1970
Chevrolet Biscayne 1965-1970
Chevrolet Caprice 1965-1970

UMI publishes this part number for Chevrolet models only. A retailer listing for the matching hardware kit extends coverage to Buick LeSabre, Buick Wildcat and a Buick Estate Wagon, but that is the retailer's own catalogue entry for the hardware kit rather than a UMI application statement for these arms, so those Buick models are not published as fitment here.

UMI publishes year, make and model for this part number without a submodel, trim, engine or drivetrain breakdown, so the fitment tags on this listing stop at model level rather than inventing a trim. The one exception is the Impala SS, which UMI names directly.

Construction Boxed arms in 1/8 inch wall USA rectangular tubing

Recommended torque UMI publishes no torque figure for this part number. Use the factory service manual specification for the 1965-1970 B-Body rear lower control arm and shock stud fasteners
Grease type Non-lithium based grease only, two to three times per year, one pump per fitting. This differs from the marine grease UMI specifies on its later B-Body arms
Shipping weight and boxed dimensions Recorded by UMI as not available
Country of manufacture United States. UMI manufactures in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania
Manufacturer warranty Two years from the original date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, to the original purchaser only and not transferable
Warranty exclusions Misuse, abuse, neglect or accident, use beyond the design limits of the product, improper installation, acts of God, handling and shipping damage, any product altered, adjusted, tampered with or defaced, non-UMI components, incidental costs such as towing and labour, and normal wear items including bearings and bushings
Warranty document conflict The packaged instruction sheet still carries an older all-caps disclaimer limiting coverage to freedom from defect at the time of purchase. UMI's live policies page publishes the current two year term and is the document summarised here. Neither is a Black Ops Auto Works warranty
Third-party component compatibility UMI states it cannot guarantee compatibility or performance of its products with other components used alongside them, so confirm dimensions before mixing brands
Suitability versus warranty UMI builds these arms to stiffen the rear of a full-size 1965-1970 Chevrolet while keeping stock ride height options and the factory spring location. That describes what the part is built to do. Warranty eligibility is separate: UMI covers defects in materials and workmanship for two years and excludes damage from exceeding the design limits of the part, improper installation, and normal wear on bushings and bearings

What's Included

  • Two boxed rear lower control arms with greaseable polyurethane bushings installed
  • Spring perches and clips suited to factory or lowering springs
  • One installation instruction sheet

The instruction sheet does not publish an itemised box contents list for this part number, and mounting bolts are not supplied.

About UMI Performance

UMI Performance builds chassis and suspension parts at 509 Hemlock Street in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, using precision bent DOM tubing, laser cut steel, TIG and robotic welding and durable powder coat finishes. This full-size Chevrolet arm uses boxed rectangular tubing rather than round DOM, which is how UMI keeps the stock spring perch and shock mounting arrangement intact.

FAQ

Which cars do these fit?

UMI publishes 1965-1970 Chevrolet Impala, Bel Air, Biscayne and Caprice for this part number.

Are they adjustable?

No. They are fixed length boxed arms that keep the factory geometry.

Do they include spring perches?

Yes. Perches and clips are included and suit factory or lowering springs.

Is mounting hardware included?

No. UMI offers a Grade 8 hardware kit for this application as a separate purchase.

Does the hardware kit include a new shock stud?

No. UMI's sheet states the kit supplies a new nut for the shock stud only. The factory shock stud is the rear control arm bolt and must be reused undamaged.

Are the arms side specific?

No. Both arms are identical and work on either side of the car.

What torque should I use?

UMI publishes no torque figure for this part number, so use the factory service manual specification for the 1965-1970 B-Body rear lower control arm and shock stud fasteners. No figure is invented on this listing and torque values from other UMI arms do not carry over.

What grease do they take?

Non-lithium based grease only, two to three times a year, one pump per fitting.

Do I have to remove the coil spring?

Yes. The procedure unloads the axle and removes the spring before the factory arm comes out.

Can I keep the rear sway bar?

Yes. The arms carry reinforced sway bar holes.

What happens if the shock stud is damaged during removal?

That is a factory part rather than a UMI part. Damage to it during removal falls under both the non-UMI parts exclusion and the improper installation exclusion in UMI's warranty, so work carefully when freeing the nut.

What warranty applies, and what is excluded from it?

UMI publishes a two year warranty from the original date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, to the original purchaser only, and it is not transferable. The same policy excludes misuse, use beyond the design limits of the part, improper installation, acts of God, handling and shipping damage, any product that has been altered, adjusted, tampered with or defaced, components not made by UMI, incidental costs such as towing and labour, and normal wear items including bearings and bushings. UMI also states it cannot guarantee compatibility with other manufacturers' components. The sheet packed in the box still carries an older disclaimer that predates the current two year term, and the live policy page is the document that governs. Neither is a Black Ops Auto Works warranty.

Installation Instructions

  1. Block the front wheels and support the car with jack stands under the frame.
  2. Start on the passenger side with a jack positioned near the shock mount.
  3. Loosen, but do not remove, both lower control arm bolts.
  4. Remove the shock nut and the shock, lower the jack so the axle hangs, and remove the coil spring.
  5. Remove the control arm bolts and the factory arm, taking care not to cut, strip or damage the factory shock stud, which must be reused.
  6. Fit the new arm body side first, then swing it up to the axle hole and pass the shock mount bolt through.
  7. Reinstall the spring, using a spring compressor if preferred, then refit the shock.
  8. Repeat on the driver side, then relocate the jack stands to the rear axle so the suspension is loaded.
  9. Tighten the mounting bolts to the factory service manual specification for this chassis, since UMI publishes no torque figure for this part number.
  10. Lube each grease fitting with one to one and a half pumps of non-lithium grease.
