Rebuild the rear of your A body with tubular control arms and the right hardware
The UMI Performance ABR801-B is a direct bolt on rear upper and lower control arm kit for 1968 to 1972 GM A body cars. Built in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania from 1.500 inch by 0.120 inch DOM tubing, this kit minimizes wheel hop, sharpens corner entry, and brings tired stamped factory control arms back to modern muscle car standards. Greasable Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings, reinforced sway bar provisions, and Grade 8 hardware mean this is a one and done upgrade for street, autocross, and track day duty.
Why A body owners choose the UMI ABR801-B kit
- Tubular rear lower control arms in 1.500 inch by 0.120 inch DOM steel, TIG welded for strength
- Non adjustable upper control arms with CNC machined 0.250 inch steel mounting plates
- Greasable Energy Suspension fluted polyurethane bushings at every pivot
- Reinforced sway bar holes with 0.120 inch wall steel sleeves TIG welded in place to prevent crushing
- New rear end housing bushings included
- Grade 8 mounting hardware with nylon lock nuts
- Durable gloss black powder coat finish
- Direct bolt in design, no welding or modification required
- Made in the USA
Designed for traction, handling, and consistency
Factory A body rear control arms are stamped steel with rubber bushings that go soft, deflect under load, and rust from the inside out. The result is wheel hop on launch, sloppy mid corner behavior, and rear end skate over bumps. UMI replaces the entire setup with thick wall DOM tubing, precision machined ends, and high durometer polyurethane bushings that hold geometry under hard cornering and hard launches. The lower arms retain the factory sway bar mounting location so you can run an OEM or aftermarket rear bar without modification.

Installation Instructions
- Park the vehicle on a level surface, raise the rear, support the chassis on jack stands, and support the rear axle housing with a jack so it cannot drop when the control arms are removed.
- Disconnect the rear sway bar end links from the lower control arms to free up the bar.
- Remove the factory rear lower control arm bolts at the axle housing and the frame, one arm at a time, and lift the original arm out.
- Install the UMI tubular lower control arm in the same orientation, using the supplied Grade 8 bolts and nylon lock nuts, leaving the hardware finger tight for now. Repeat for the second lower arm.
- Remove and replace the upper control arms one at a time the same way, then install the new Energy Suspension rear end housing bushings per the included instructions.
- Set the vehicle back on its wheels at ride height, then torque all four control arm bolts and the housing bushing hardware to the values listed in the UMI instruction sheet.
- Reconnect the rear sway bar end links to the reinforced sway bar mounts on the new lower arms.
- Grease each polyurethane bushing through the supplied zerk fittings, then road test at low speed and confirm there are no contact points, noises, or binding before driving aggressively.

Control Arms
Control arms are the key suspension linkages that connect the wheel hub and knuckle assembly to the vehicle frame, controlling wheel travel through both compression and droop cycles. Worn OEM control arms with loose ball joints or deteriorated bushings cause vague steering, tire wear, and handling inconsistency that only go away with replacement or upgrade.Popular UpgradesTubular steel upper control arms for lifted trucks and SUVs are the most popular upgrade in the control arm category, correcting the geometry compromised by a suspension lift and restoring proper caster angle and ball joint centering. Adjustable upper control arms allow alignment angles like caster and camber to be dialed in precisely after a lift or lowering modification. Replacement lower control arms with polyurethane or solid aluminum bushings improve response and longevity compared to worn OEM rubber mounts. Why do I need new control arms after a lift kit?A suspension lift changes the angle at which the OEM upp...

Suspension
Aftermarket suspension systems improve handling, ride quality, and ride height adjustment beyond what the factory suspension provides. From lowering springs and coilover kits for sport handling to lift kits and leveling kits for truck and SUV off-road capability, quality suspension components transform how a vehicle rides and handles. Popular Suspension Upgrades Popular suspension upgrades include coilover kits for adjustable ride height and damping, sport lowering springs for improved handling and reduced body roll, performance shock absorbers and strut assemblies, sway bar and end link upgrade kits, subframe brace kits, and complete suspension packages for lifted trucks and off-road SUVs. Alignment kits including camber bolts and camber arms are also frequently ordered after ride height changes. What is the difference between coilovers and lowering springs? Coilovers are complete shock and spring assemblies with adjustable ride height set by threading the spring perch on the shock...
