UMI 35mm Solid Chromoly Front Sway Bar Kit for the 1982-1992 Camaro and Firebird, Gloss Black Bar
The heaviest hitting front bar UMI builds for a third generation F-body: a solid 1-3/8 inch 4140 chromoly bar that UMI measures as 22 percent more rigid than the hollow 36mm 1LE bar. It comes with relocation brackets that open up clearance around the steering box, idler arm, wheels and tires, plus poly bushings, zinc plated clamshells, heavy duty end links and all the hardware.

Third generation only. UMI does not publish a 1993-2002 application for this bar, and the fourth generation front bars are a different part.
The installation branches depending on whether a front wonder bar is fitted. Without one, the supplied U-shaped spacers are not used. With a wonder bar such as UMI's 2030, a single spacer goes under the driver side bracket and a double spacer under the passenger side; the supplied spacers are 3/16 inch thick to match that bar, and a different thickness bar needs washers to make up the difference.
Finishes are mixed within the kit. The bar carries the powder coat finish of the variant you order, while the relocation brackets are specified as black powder coated and the spacers as black zinc regardless of bar colour.

FAQ
Is this bar solid or hollow?Solid. It is the one solid bar in UMI's F-body front bar range, CNC bent from 4140 chromoly.
How much stiffer is it than the 1LE bar?UMI publishes 22 percent more rigid than the hollow 36mm 1LE front sway bar. That is the only quantified rigidity claim UMI makes across these bars.
Why does it include brackets?The relocation brackets reposition the bar to improve clearance around the steering box and idler arm as well as at the wheels and tires, while still using the stock mounting location.
What are the torque specifications?40 ft-lb on the relocation bracket bolts, on both the wonder bar and no wonder bar install paths, and 40 ft-lb on the clamshell M10 flange nuts.
Do I use the U-shaped spacers?Only if a wonder bar is fitted. Without one, the spacers are not used. With one, a single spacer goes under the driver side bracket and a double under the passenger side.
What if my wonder bar is a different thickness?The supplied spacers are 3/16 inch to match UMI's 2030. UMI says to make up any difference with washers, which are not supplied.
Should the poly bushings be greased?Yes for the sway bar bushings. UMI advises lightly greasing the inside of the poly bushing before installation. The end link bushings are separate and must not be greased.
Is thread locker needed?Yes. UMI calls for a small amount of blue Loctite on the supplied studs, which is not included in the kit.
What is the warranty position on this part?UMI's website states a two-year warranty from the original purchase date for the original purchaser. The installation sheet in the box carries a disclaimer of warranty and limits coverage to replacement of parts, excluding labour and towing. The two UMI documents conflict, so confirm coverage with UMI rather than relying on either alone.
Can I pair it with the 22mm rear bar?The 22mm rear bar covers 1982-2002, so it overlaps this front bar only across 1982-1992. Any front and rear pairing has to be scoped to those years. UMI's 93-02 front and rear kit is not compatible with this car.
Is the whole kit black?The bar carries the finish you order. The relocation brackets are specified black powder coated and the spacers black zinc regardless of the bar colour, so the kit is not a single uniform finish.
Does it work with adjustable struts?UMI states the bar is compatible with a variety of strut options, including adjustable styles.
Installation Instructions
- Lift the vehicle with the front wheels off the ground and set it on jack stands before going underneath; a second person is recommended.
- Remove the existing sway bar, taking the end links off first and then the chassis clamshells; cutting may be needed to free old end links since new ones are supplied.
- Remove the bolts shown in figure 1 of UMI's sheet, noting the factory bracket may shift slightly.
- Without a wonder bar, install the black relocation brackets against the factory sway bar mounting pad with the counterbored holes visible from below and the threaded holes offset toward the front of the car, fit the M10 x 30mm button heads in the counterbored holes and the M10 x 35mm flange head bolts where the earlier bolts came out, and leave the U-shaped spacers unused.
- With a wonder bar, install it between the relocation bracket and the chassis, start the same fasteners loosely, then place the single U-shaped spacer under the driver side bracket and the double spacer under the passenger side.
- Torque the relocation bracket bolts to 40 ft-lb on either install path.
- Fit the supplied studs into the threaded holes with a small amount of blue Loctite, short side into the bracket, hand tight.
- Lightly grease the inside of the poly bushings, fit them to the bar, install the bar, place the clamshells over the studs and secure with the four M10 flange nuts.
- Centre the bar side to side, then torque the clamshell flange nuts to 40 ft-lb.
- Loosely install the end links in UMI's published order: bolt, washer, bushing, sway bar, bushing, washer, sleeve, washer, bushing, A-arm, bushing, washer, nut.
- Assemble each end link with the washers cupping toward the bushings and the bushing nipple centering the stack in the sway bar and control arm mounting points.
- Lower the car so it sits at ride height on all four tires before the end links are tightened, because UMI states the vehicle weight must be on the sway bar to prevent bushing bind.
- Using a 9/16 inch wrench and ratchet, tighten each end link only until the bushings start to bulge slightly, and do not grease or over tighten the end link bushings.
- Turn the steering wheel lock to lock and check clearance around the brake lines, tie rods and control arms before driving.
Procedure and torque values come from UMI's own Item 2117 installation sheet. UMI does not host this installation sheet on its own website. The document is UMI's own printed sheet, on UMI letterhead, served from a retailer's static PDF host, so treat it as a manufacturer document on a retailer host rather than a current UMI-hosted page. The same sheet also carries a disclaimer of warranty that differs from UMI's website warranty; both are described in the specifications above and neither is adopted as this store's own terms.
