UMI 35mm Tubular Front Sway Bar for the 1993-2002 Camaro and Firebird, Bright Red
A one-piece 35mm tubular front bar that replaces the factory 30mm or 32mm front sway bar on a fourth generation F-body and comes with everything needed to fit it: heavy duty end links, large diameter greaseable bushings and zinc plated clamshells. The centre-to-centre dimension is 50 1/2 inches and it mounts in the factory locations with no modifications.

UMI notes the bar may sit close to the crank pulley and A/C line but will not contact them, because the bend is contoured to clear as the suspension loads and unloads. UMI recommends moving the bar as far forward as possible using the slots in the new clamshells to gain clearance.

What size is the factory bar this replaces?UMI states this 35mm bar is more rigid than the factory front bars, which are 30mm and 32mm depending on the car.

The instructions say do not grease, but the bushings are greaseable. Which is it?Those refer to two different bushing sets. The large diameter sway bar bushings that hold the bar to the chassis are greaseable. The end link bushings are not, and the end link procedure specifically says not to grease them and to tighten only until they bulge slightly.
Will the bar hit the crank pulley or A/C line?UMI states it may sit close but will not hit, because the bend is contoured to clear through suspension travel. Moving the bar as far forward as the clamshell slots allow gains extra clearance.
What are the torque specifications?None are published for this bar. UMI's only tightening instruction is the end link method, tightening with a 9/16 inch wrench until the bushings begin to bulge slightly with the car at ride height. For chassis fasteners, use the applicable General Motors factory service information for your model year.
Why must the car be on the ground before the end links are tightened?UMI states the vehicle's weight must be on the sway bar before the end links are tightened, otherwise the bushings bind at the wrong point in the travel.
Is the bar adjustable?No adjustment holes or blades appear on the bar or in the installation sheet, so treat it as a fixed rate bar. UMI does not itself use the word non-adjustable.
Can I add the rear bar later?Yes. UMI's 22mm tubular rear bar covers this application, and UMI also sells the two together as a front and rear kit for 1993-2002 cars.
Installation Instructions
- Jack under the front cross-member and set jack stands behind the front tires on the frame so the front control arms unload; a second person is recommended.
- Remove the old end links first, using an impact wrench or cutting them off if needed, then remove the factory bar.
- Install the new end links one side at a time, finger tight.
- Attach the bar to both end links finger tight, then mount the new clamshells to the existing factory holes.
- Centre the bar under the vehicle, moving it as far forward as the clamshell slots allow to gain clearance around the crank pulley and A/C line.
- Assemble each end link with the washers cupping toward the bushings and the bushing nipple centering the stack in the sway bar and control arm mounting points.
- Lower the car so it sits at ride height on all four tires before the end links are tightened, because UMI states the vehicle weight must be on the sway bar to prevent bushing bind.
- Using a 9/16 inch wrench and ratchet, tighten each end link only until the bushings start to bulge slightly, and do not grease or over tighten the end link bushings.
- Turn the steering wheel lock to lock and check clearance around the brake lines, tie rods and control arms before driving.
Procedure comes from UMI's own Item 2112 installation sheet, which lists a 13mm and 15mm wrench or socket, a three ton floor jack and two jack stands. UMI does not host this installation sheet on its own website. The document is UMI's own printed sheet, on UMI letterhead, served from a retailer's static PDF host, so treat it as a manufacturer document on a retailer host rather than a current UMI-hosted page. No ft-lb torque values appear in that sheet.
