Installation Instructions

1. Safely raise and support the vehicle. Drain differential fluid from the GM 8.5in housing.
2. Remove the differential cover and drain remaining fluid.
3. Remove the carrier bearing caps, noting their original positions and marking them for reassembly.
4. Remove the differential carrier from the housing.
5. Press off original carrier bearings from the carrier using a bearing puller.
6. Install new HD Timken carrier bearings from the CK GM8.5-HD onto the carrier using a press.
7. Install the new carrier bearing races into the housing bores, fully seated.
8. Install the carrier into the housing. Use the shim kit from the CK GM8.5-HD to adjust backlash to specification.
9. Verify gear contact pattern with marking compound. Adjust shims as needed.
10. Reinstall bearing caps in original positions. Torque to manufacturer specification.
11. Reinstall differential cover with new gasket or RTV sealant. Fill with correct GM-spec differential fluid to the proper level. Lower vehicle.
