UMI Bolt-In Rear Lower Control Arm Relocation Brackets in Black for the 1982-2002 Camaro and Firebird

Lowering a third or fourth-generation F-body pushes the rear lower control arm angle in the wrong direction, and the car answers with a lazy launch. These black powder coated UMI brackets bolt to the axle housing and move the rear pickup point down through a set of laser-cut holes, so the arm angle and instant center come back without a welder anywhere near the car.

Key Features

  • Lowers the rear of the lower control arm to improve instant center and forward traction on launch.
  • UMI reports an average reduction of 0.10 second or better in 60-foot times from its track testing.
  • CAD designed and CNC laser cut from 3/16 inch mild steel plate.
  • Multiple adjustment holes follow the natural arc of the lower control arm, so the arm bolts in without binding at any position.
  • Robust internal flanges reinforce the bracket and let the factory control arm bushings bolt directly in.
  • New grade 10.9 hardware is supplied with the pair.
  • Bolt-in fitment with no drilling and no welding required, in a roughly one to two hour job.
  • Works with factory lower control arms and popular aftermarket styles, at stock height or lowered.

Pontiac Firebird 1982-2002, every model year listed individually by UMI

Model year work published by UMI: 1993-1997 cars may need up to 1/4 inch trimmed from the brake weight, and 1998-2002 cars need the parking brake cable bracket cut off and re-attached to the relocation bracket.

About UMI Performance

UMI Performance designs and manufactures in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, and this bracket set shows the pattern the company follows on plate parts: CAD design, CNC laser cutting, formed reinforcing flanges and powder coat, with grade 10.9 fasteners packed alongside. UMI supplies a printed instruction sheet that includes model-year notes for the F-body brake weight and parking brake bracket.

FAQ

Will these work with a Moser rear end?

No. UMI states they are not suitable for Moser Engineering rear ends and points those owners to part number 2011.

What about a Strange rear end or the factory housing?

Both are covered. UMI lists compatibility with factory housings and Strange Engineering rear ends.

Does my 1998-2002 car need cutting?

Yes, one small piece. UMI's sheet has you cut off the parking brake cable bracket and re-attach it to the relocation bracket after installation.

What about 1993-1997 cars?

Those may need up to 1/4 inch trimmed from the brake weight, and UMI notes some cars need minor grinding or trimming of the brake bracket.

How far down does the arm move?

UMI's marketing copy and its printed instruction sheet describe the drop hole positions differently, so the figure to rely on is the 2 inch hole both sources name. Contact UMI if a specific deeper position is critical to your setup.

Do I need to weld anything?

Not for the brackets themselves, which are bolt-in. On 1998-2002 cars the parking brake cable bracket is welded or bolted to the relocation bracket afterwards.

Is hardware in the box?

Yes. UMI supplies new grade 10.9 hardware, including the M12 and 7/16 inch bolts, nuts, washers and the two steel sleeves.

Can I keep my factory control arms?

Yes. The brackets are designed around factory bushings and also accept popular aftermarket control arm styles.

What torque values does UMI publish?

Shock stud at 80 ft-lbs, the 7/16 inch x 4 inch bolts at 50 ft-lbs, and all four control arm bolts at 72 ft-lbs with the suspension loaded.

Will this help a street car or only a drag car?

UMI positions the gain as forward traction and 60-foot time, so the benefit is largest on a car that launches hard, but the arm angle correction also applies to a lowered street car.

Installation Instructions

  1. Block the front wheels, raise the car and set jack stands under the frame so the rear end hangs free.
  2. Install one side at a time so the axle stays located.
  3. Remove the rear-side lower control arm bolt on that side and let the arm swing down.
  4. Jack the axle tube slightly and remove the shock nut and stud.
  5. Slide the relocation bracket over the control arm mount and install the 7/16 inch x 4 inch bolt with its steel sleeve from the inside out, leaving the lock nut loose.
  6. Refit the shock stud and tighten it to 80 ft-lbs.
  7. Swing the control arm up to the chosen hole, pushing the rear end forward with a pry bar or a helper, then install the M12 x 100mm bolt.
  8. Tighten the 7/16 inch x 4 inch bolt to 50 ft-lbs, leaving the M12 bolt loose while the suspension is unloaded.
  9. Repeat the procedure on the passenger side, trimming the brake weight or relocating the parking brake cable bracket where the model year requires it.
  10. Lower the car so the suspension is loaded, then tighten all four control arm bolts to 72 ft-lbs.
