The N55 in the 235i responds well to ECU tuning. A stage 1 map alone typically reaches 370–390 hp. With a supporting downpipe, intake, intercooler, and charge pipe on a stage 2 map, the 235i can reach 400–420 hp — approaching M Performance territory without engine internals work.

Is the BMW 235i worth upgrading over the M235i?

The 235i and M235i share the same N55 engine but the M235i comes with additional factory chassis upgrades including an electronically controlled limited slip differential, revised suspension tuning, and larger brakes. For track-day builds, the M235i's extra factory hardware is worth the premium. For primarily street-driven builds, the 235i starts at a lower cost and reaches similar power levels through tuning.
