Rubber & Plastic Grommets for Auto Use
Automotive grommets are small but critical sealing and protection components used wherever wiring harnesses, hoses, or tubes pass through metal panels, firewalls, or frames, protecting the cables and hoses from chafing damage while sealing the opening against water, fumes, and debris infiltration. A failed or missing grommet allows moisture and engine compartment fumes to enter the passenger cabin through wiring and hose pass-throughs, and allows the sharp edges of punched or drilled holes to cut through insulation and cause short circuits over time. Grommets are used extensively in OEM vehicle construction and are required whenever new wiring or plumbing lines are added to a vehicle during an upgrade or custom build project. Available in a wide range of inside diameter, outside diameter, and panel thickness combinations, selecting the correct grommet requires knowing the hole size in the panel and the diameter of the wire, hose, or tube passing through it.
Popular Upgrades
Closed-center rubber grommets with a slitted center are the most popular for wiring pass-throughs, as the slit allows the grommet to be installed around an existing harness without cutting or desoldering. Open-center grommets in EPDM rubber are the choice for hose and tube pass-throughs where the continuous opening is needed for the hose to pass cleanly. Split-grommets in nylon or polypropylene are used in production vehicles for stamped panel edge protection and are available in bulk rolls for custom wiring and fabrication shops. Firewall pass-through plugs with integrated compression seals are the correct choice for high-integrity sealing of power cable pass-throughs in engine bay electrical installations.
Performance and Handling
When routing large-gauge power cables for audio systems, engine management wiring, or electric motor controllers through the firewall, a firewall grommet with a compression seal and a waterproof boot around the cable provides the highest level of moisture and fume protection. Standard rubber grommets are adequate for low-pressure wiring harness routing but should be inspected periodically on older vehicles where the rubber has hardened and cracked, losing the sealing and cushioning function they were installed to provide. In high-heat areas near the exhaust or engine, silicone grommets rated for temperatures above 400 degrees Fahrenheit are the correct material choice over standard EPDM rubber.
What size grommet do I need for my firewall wiring pass-through?
To select the correct grommet, measure the diameter of the hole in the firewall panel and the diameter of the wiring harness or cable passing through it. The grommet's outer diameter must match the panel hole for a snug fit, and the inner diameter must match or be slightly smaller than the wire bundle diameter to maintain a seal. For a 1-inch hole in a 0.060-inch thick firewall with a half-inch wire bundle, a grommet with 1-inch OD, 0.5-inch ID, and a groove depth matching the panel thickness will provide the correct installation. Always verify the panel thickness matches the grommet groove depth, as a grommet with the wrong groove depth will not retain properly in the panel.
Can I reuse grommets after removing them?
Rubber and EPDM grommets can typically be reused if they are removed carefully without tearing and have not become hardened or cracked from age and heat exposure. Grommets that have been in service for many years in high-temperature areas near the exhaust or firewall are often too hardened to provide a proper seal after reinstallation and should be replaced. New grommets are inexpensive, and replacing old grommets whenever they are disturbed during service is the correct practice for maintaining a proper seal and protecting new wiring from edge damage.
