Superchargers are belt-driven forced induction devices that compress intake air entering the engine, increasing the air-fuel charge density and allowing more fuel to be burned per combustion cycle. Unlike turbochargers, superchargers are driven directly by the crankshaft and deliver boost without lag at any throttle position.

Types of Superchargers Available

The main supercharger types available for aftermarket applications include Roots-type positive displacement blowers for strong low-RPM torque and immediate throttle response, twin-screw positive displacement superchargers offering excellent efficiency and heat management, and centrifugal superchargers that deliver boost progressively through the RPM range, similar to a turbocharger, and are popular on compact engine bays due to their smaller footprint.

What vehicles can be supercharged?

Bolt-on supercharger kits are available for many naturally aspirated V8 and V6 platforms including Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette, Camaro, and Silverado, Dodge Challenger and Charger, and many Toyota, Subaru, and Nissan applications. Supercharger kits are designed around specific engine families, so compatibility is determined by the engine platform rather than just the vehicle make and model.

How is a supercharger different from a turbocharger?

A supercharger is belt-driven from the engine crankshaft and delivers instant boost at all RPM levels without lag. A turbocharger is exhaust-driven and typically builds boost as exhaust gas volume increases with engine speed. Superchargers sacrifice some parasitic crankshaft power to drive the compressor, while turbochargers recover exhaust energy that would otherwise be wasted. Both systems produce meaningful power gains when properly engineered for the application.
