Progressive-Rate Sport Springs for 1996-1998 VW Golf and Jetta MK3 with 8V Engine

The H&R 54748 Sport Springs lower the center of gravity on 1996 to 1998 Volkswagen Golf and Jetta MK3 models equipped with the 8V engine. Front drop is approximately 0.75 inch with a rear drop of approximately 0.25 inch, delivering a more level stance and reduced body roll without sacrificing daily drivability. H&R manufactures these springs from 54SiCr6 spring steel rated at 290,000 psi tensile strength, providing the elasticity and fatigue resistance required for a performance street spring. The progressive spring rate design transitions from a softer initial rate for comfort to a firmer rate under load for predictable handling. This product applies to vehicles produced after July 1, 1996. An important fitment note: there is a mid-production-year change in the front strut top hat size verify which top hat your vehicle has before ordering. MPN: 54748.

Installation Instructions

  1. Verify your vehicle was produced after July 1, 1996, by checking the door jamb sticker production date. Vehicles produced before this date require part 54764.
  2. Check the front strut top hat type: open the hood and inspect the top of the strut towers. If a black plastic cap is present, your vehicle has the large top hat, which requires part 54764. If a round metal top with rubber is present and no plastic cap, your vehicle has the smaller top hat and is compatible with H&R 54748.
  3. Lift the vehicle safely on a level surface using a floor jack and jack stands rated for vehicle weight.
  4. Remove the factory springs using a spring compressor; never attempt to remove a compressed spring without proper equipment.
  5. Install the H&R 54748 springs in the correct front and rear orientation per the H&R installation guide.
  6. Torque all suspension fasteners to OEM specification per the Volkswagen MK3 service manual.
  7. Perform a four-wheel alignment after installation, as lowering the vehicle changes suspension geometry.
  8. Allow springs to settle over the first 500 miles before final alignment adjustment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does "after 7/1/96" mean for H&R 54748?
A: Volkswagen made a mid-year production change to the front strut top hat design during the 1996 model year. Vehicles built after July 1, 1996 use a smaller top hat compatible with H&R 54748. Vehicles built before that date use a larger top hat and require H&R 54764 instead.

Q: How do I check which top hat my MK3 has?
A: Open the hood and look at the top of the front strut towers. If you see a black plastic cap on top, use H&R 54764. If you see a round metal dome with rubber around it and no plastic cap, your car uses the smaller top hat and H&R 54748 is the correct choice.

Q: Is H&R 54748 compatible with VR6 or TDI models?
A: H&R 54748 is calibrated for the 8V engine weight distribution. The VR6 is heavier at the front; VR6 owners should verify with H&R's fitment guide. The TDI application is listed for 1997 to 1998 models in the H&R fitment database, but confirm your specific production date.

Q: Will H&R 54748 work with stock struts?
A: Yes. H&R Sport Springs are designed to be a direct replacement for OEM springs and are compatible with the factory MK3 strut and shock assemblies. They also pair well with most aftermarket strut inserts and shocks.

Q: Do I need a wheel alignment after installing H&R 54748?
A: Yes. Any spring change that alters ride height affects camber and toe settings. A four-wheel alignment is required after installation to prevent uneven tire wear and maintain safe handling.

Q: What is the difference between H&R 54748 and 54748-55?
A: Part number 54748 is the standard Sport Spring. Part number 54748-55 is the OE Sport Spring with a milder lowering profile. Our product HRS54748 corresponds to the Sport Spring 54748. Confirm the part number with your invoice to verify which version you are purchasing.

Q: Will this spring work with coilover sleeves?
A: H&R 54748 is a drop-in replacement spring, not designed for coilover conversion. For coilover sleeve kits, use springs rated for the sleeve diameter and spring perch design of that specific kit.

Q: How much does the vehicle drop with H&R 54748?
A: Approximately 0.75 inch at the front and 0.25 inch at the rear. Actual drop varies with vehicle weight, equipment, and existing suspension wear. Heavier configurations may see slightly less drop.

Q: Is a professional installation required?
A: A spring compressor and basic mechanical skill are required. Professional installation is recommended to ensure proper spring seating and safe suspension reassembly. An alignment shop visit is required post-installation regardless.
