Semi-Metallic Drum Brake Shoes Built for Classic Chevrolet Drum Systems

The PowerStop SSH55 Autospecialty brake shoes bring modern semi-metallic friction technology to classic 1951-1962 Chevrolet drum brake systems. SSH55 shoes are precision cam ground for a true fit against the drum arc, post cured for reduced break-in time and stronger initial bite, and chamfered on the leading and trailing edges to eliminate the chatter and noise common in vintage drum setups. Compatible with 1951-1958 Chevrolet Fleetline Car, 1953-1958 Bel Air, 1953-1962 Corvette, 1953-1956 One-Fifty Series, 1953-1956 Two-Ten Series, 1957-1958 Del Ray, 1958 Biscayne, Brookwood, Impala, Nomad, and Yeoman. A complete hardware kit is included so there is no need to source separate springs, clips, or retainers for the job.

Key Features

  • Semi-metallic friction compound post cured for stronger initial braking and shorter break-in period
  • Precision cam ground arc matches drum curvature for maximum contact area and consistent pedal feel
  • Chamfered leading and trailing edges prevent chatter, squeal, and grabbing in classic drum caliper setups
  • 100% asbestos-free and copper-free friction material meets current environmental standards
  • New steel backing plates with rust-resistant coating extend service life
  • Bonded shoe construction eliminates rivet pop and pad separation concerns
  • Complete premium hardware kit included: springs, adjuster, retainer pins, and clips
  • Direct fitment replacement for 1951-1962 Chevrolet drum brake applications

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles does the PowerStop SSH55 fit?

The SSH55 fits 1951-1962 classic Chevrolet models including the 1951-1952 Fleetline Car, 1953-1958 Bel Air, 1953-1962 Corvette, 1953-1956 One-Fifty Series, 1953-1956 Two-Ten Series, 1957-1958 Del Ray, and 1958 Biscayne, Brookwood, Impala, Nomad, and Yeoman.

Are the SSH55 shoes a rear axle set or just one wheel?

The PowerStop SSH55 is sold as a complete rear axle set covering both rear wheels. No additional shoe purchase is needed to complete the rear brake job.

Does SSH55 include the hardware kit?

Yes. PowerStop includes a premium hardware kit with the SSH55 containing all springs, retainer pins, adjuster hardware, and clips needed to complete a full rear drum brake service without sourcing separate hardware.

What drum size do the SSH55 shoes fit?

The SSH55 is designed for 11-inch diameter drums with a 2-inch wide braking surface, which is the standard rear drum specification for 1951-1962 full-size and mid-size Chevrolet passenger cars and the early Corvette.

What is the difference between bonded and riveted brake shoes?

Bonded shoes like the SSH55 use high-pressure adhesive bonding to attach the friction material to the steel backing plate. This eliminates rivet heads that can score drum surfaces at low pad thickness. Bonded construction also allows the friction material to be used to a thinner minimum thickness before replacement is required.

Do semi-metallic shoes cause more drum wear than organic shoes?

Modern semi-metallic shoes like the SSH55 are formulated to work within the hardness range of standard cast iron drums. When properly bedded, they provide excellent stopping power without accelerating drum wear beyond normal service intervals. Asbestos-free and copper-free formulations also eliminate legacy contamination concerns from older friction compounds.

How do I bed in new SSH55 brake shoes?

After installation and adjustment, perform 8 to 10 moderate stops from 30 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between each stop. Avoid hard or panic stops during the first 200 miles of use. The post-cure process PowerStop applies to the SSH55 significantly shortens the full bedding window compared to raw semi-metallic compounds.

Can the SSH55 be used on the front axle?

The SSH55 is designed and validated for rear drum applications on the listed 1951-1962 Chevrolet vehicles. Front drum specifications on these vehicles differ in arc geometry and shoe width, so SSH55 is not interchangeable with front drum shoes.

What is PowerStop's warranty on the SSH55?

PowerStop covers the SSH55 Autospecialty brake shoes under a limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Contact PowerStop directly with your order information to initiate a warranty claim if needed.

Installation Instructions

  1. Safely lift and support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the rear wheels and brake drums. If the drum is seized, use a drum puller or tap gently with a rubber mallet around the circumference.
  2. Inspect the drum interior for scoring, cracks, or diameter beyond the discard spec (11.060 inches for most applications). Resurface or replace as needed before installing new shoes.
  3. Photograph the existing shoe and spring configuration on one side before disassembly. Use the undisturbed side as a reference if needed.
  4. Using brake spring pliers, remove the return springs, hold-down springs, and retainer pins. Remove the old shoes and adjuster assembly from the backing plate.
  5. Clean the backing plate contact pads and adjuster threads with brake cleaner. Apply a thin coat of high-temperature brake grease to the backing plate contact ledges only. Do not contaminate the drum surface or friction material.
  6. Install the new adjuster assembly and SSH55 shoes using the hardware from the included kit. Seat the hold-down pins and springs first, then attach the return springs per the original configuration.
  7. Adjust the shoes outward until light drag is felt when turning the drum by hand, then back off slightly for clearance.
  8. Reinstall the drum and wheel, torque lug nuts to factory specification, and repeat on the opposite side.
  9. Lower the vehicle and pump the brake pedal firmly until it feels solid. Test at low speed before driving at normal speeds.
  10. Perform 8 to 10 light break-in stops from 30 mph to bed the friction material and complete the post-cure activation.

From daily-driver ceramic pads to track-spec metallic compounds, there is a brake pad for every application. Popular ProductsTop brake pad brands include EBC Brakes, Hawk Performance, StopTech, and Akebono. Popular compound choices include ceramic pads for low dust and quiet operation, semi-metallic for improved bite, and full metallic for track use. What brake pad compound should I choose?Ceramic pads are best for street use, offering low dust, quiet operation, and good bite. Semi-metallic pads add more stopping power at the cost of more dust. Full metallic and racing compounds are reserved for track use where extreme heat resistance is needed. How do I know when brake pads need replacement? Most brake pads include a wear indicator that creates a squealing sound when pad thickness reaches the minimum limit. ...
