QA1 is a Minnesota-based manufacturer of high-performance suspension, driveshaft, and rod end components. Their Pro Coil shock lineup is engineered for classic muscle car applications where factory shock geometry does not accommodate aftermarket coil-over conversions. Every GS501 shock leaves their Lakeville, MN facility 100% dyno tested and serialized, and can be returned to any QA1 Authorized Service Center for rebuilding or revalving to maintain long-term performance.
The QAPGS501 is the QA1 GS501 Pro Front Coil-Over Shock sold as a single unit without springs. It is designed for 1964-1988 GM A-Body, F-Body, G-Body, and X-Body platforms including Camaro, Firebird, Chevelle, El Camino, Nova, Monte Carlo, Malibu, Regal, Cutlass, and 1982-2004 S-10 / S-15 trucks running QA1 Pro Coil front suspension setups.
Does the QAPGS501 come with springs? No. The QAPGS501 GS501 is the shock only. QA1 Pro Coil springs must be ordered separately. QA1 recommends spring rates based on vehicle front-end weight: 400 lb/in for small-block builds, 500 lb/in for big-block builds in most A-Body and F-Body applications. Refer to QA1's spring rate chart for your specific platform.
How does the single adjustable valving work on the GS501?The GS501 shock features 18 valving positions adjustable via the knob at the top of the shock body. Turning the adjuster changes compression and rebound damping simultaneously. Lower settings provide a softer, more compliant ride; higher settings firm up the shock for performance driving or autocross use.
What tools are required to install the QAPGS501?Standard hand tools are needed for the bolt-in installation. To set ride height using the threaded body adjustment, a spanner wrench is required (QA1 P/N T114W or T115W, sold separately). Optional thrust bearing kits (QA1 P/N 7888-109) can be added for smoother suspension articulation on lowered applications.
Can I use the QAPGS501 on a 1967-1969 Camaro or Firebird?Yes. The GS501 shock is compatible with 1967-1969 Camaro and Firebird front suspension geometry at stock mounting positions. QA1 recommends 400 lb/in springs for small-block builds and 500 lb/in for big-block builds on these F-Body platforms. Refer to QA1 installation instructions for bump stop positioning specific to first-generation F-Body applications.
Is the QAPGS501 rebuildable?Yes. Every QAPGS501 GS501 shock is individually serialized and designed to be serviced and rebuilt by QA1 Authorized Service Centers. This keeps long-term ownership costs lower than replacement-only shocks and makes revalving possible as your build or driving style changes over time.
What ride height adjustment does the GS501 provide? The fully threaded body on the QAPGS501 provides 0 to 2 inches of front ride height lowering adjustment. This allows fine tuning of front-end stance and weight distribution without changing springs or other suspension components.
What warranty does the QA1 GS501 carry? The QAPGS501 is covered by QA1's Limited Lifetime Warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. Warranty registration is completed at QA1.net/Warranty. The lifetime warranty applies to QA1 single-adjustable shock absorbers used in normal performance driving applications.
Can I run the QAPGS501 on a lowered or modified suspension? The QAPGS501 is designed to accommodate 0 to 2 inches of front height reduction at stock mount locations. Running significantly lower than factory ride height may affect shock travel at full droop or full bump. Verify that the 10.125 inch compressed and 15 inch extended lengths work within your specific suspension geometry before installation on heavily modified cars.

Aftermarket suspension systems improve handling, ride quality, and ride height adjustment beyond what the factory suspension provides. From lowering springs and coilover kits for sport handling to lift kits and leveling kits for truck and SUV off-road capability, quality suspension components transform how a vehicle rides and handles. Popular Suspension Upgrades Popular suspension upgrades include coilover kits for adjustable ride height and damping, sport lowering springs for improved handling and reduced body roll, performance shock absorbers and strut assemblies, sway bar and end link upgrade kits, subframe brace kits, and complete suspension packages for lifted trucks and off-road SUVs. Alignment kits including camber bolts and camber arms are also frequently ordered after ride height changes. What is the difference between coilovers and lowering springs? Coilovers are complete shock and spring assemblies with adjustable ride height set by threading the spring perch on the shock...
