The RS999229 is a front shock absorber from Rancho's RS9000XL series, built for stock-height Ford Explorer, Ford Ranger, Mercury Mountaineer, Mazda B3000, and Mazda B4000 applications spanning nearly two decades of production. With nine externally adjustable damping positions, the RS999229 allows drivers to tune ride quality and handling response on demand, without tools and without removing the shock from the vehicle.
The RS9000XL design uses a triple-tube configuration that keeps fluid volume and pressure stable across the full stroke, preventing the fade and inconsistency that single-tube shocks can develop under extended use. The RS999229 is gas-charged to eliminate aeration and maintains consistent damping whether you are on a smooth highway or a rutted dirt road. Turn the external adjuster knob to position 1 for a compliant, comfortable ride during daily commuting or to position 9 for firmer damping that controls body motion during towing, hauling, or spirited driving. Intermediate positions let you find the precise balance your driving style and load conditions demand.
The RS999229 is engineered for vehicles at factory ride height with no lift modification. Its 18.00-inch extended length and 13.87-inch compressed length match the front suspension geometry of the covered Explorer, Ranger, Mountaineer, and Mazda B-Series platforms at stock height. The upper mount is a stud style and the lower mount is a T-bar, both compatible with the original mounting points on these vehicles. Polyurethane bushings are included for improved NVH isolation and long service life compared to OE rubber bushings.
For Ford Ranger fitment, the RS999229 requires that the vehicle use a torsion bar front spring system. Rangers equipped with a coil spring or coilover front suspension are not covered by this application. Confirm your Ranger's front spring type before ordering. This applies to all Ranger model years listed in the fitment table below.
The RS999229 features a 2.750-inch diameter shock body with a red polyurethane boot protecting the piston rod from dirt, moisture, and road debris. The triple-tube steel construction is designed for long service life under the varied load conditions common to trucks and SUVs used for both on-road and mild off-road driving. All hardware and bushings needed for installation are included in the box.
The RS999229 fits the following vehicles at stock ride height. Ford Ranger applications require a torsion bar front spring. Ford Explorer applications exclude vehicles equipped with Automatic Ride Control (ARC). All individual model years are listed below.

Will the RS999229 fit a Ford Ranger with coil springs instead of torsion bars?
No. The RS999229 is designed specifically for Ford Rangers equipped with a torsion bar front spring system. Rangers that came from the factory with coil springs or a coilover front suspension use different shock dimensions and mounting geometry and are not covered by this application. If you are unsure of your Ranger's front spring type, inspect the front suspension or consult your owner's manual before ordering.
Does the RS999229 work on a Ford Explorer with Automatic Ride Control?
No. Explorers equipped with Automatic Ride Control (ARC) use a different shock with an electronically controlled valve body that is incompatible with the RS999229. The RS999229 is for non-ARC Explorer applications only. Check your vehicle's build sheet or look for the ARC module in the engine bay or rear cargo area to confirm whether your Explorer has this system.
Can I buy just one RS999229, or do I need two?
Rancho recommends and most professional installers advise replacing front shocks in pairs. One new shock on one side paired with a worn original on the other creates unequal damping across the front axle, which can cause the vehicle to pull under braking and affect steering response. For a complete front axle installation, order two units of RS999229.
Is the RS999229 a direct bolt-on replacement for stock shocks?
Yes. The RS999229 uses the same upper stud and lower T-bar mounting points as the original equipment front shocks on the covered vehicles. No drilling, cutting, or fabrication is required. The included polyurethane bushings replace the OE rubber bushings and install into the existing mount locations. Standard hand tools and a floor jack with stands are sufficient for the job.
How does the 9-position adjuster improve performance for towing with a Ford Ranger?
When towing a trailer or carrying a heavy payload in the bed, the front suspension unloads slightly as weight shifts rearward. Firming up the RS999229 to position 7, 8, or 9 counteracts that weight transfer and keeps the front end stable, reducing nose-lift and improving steering feel during towing. Once the load is removed, you can dial back to a softer position for normal driving comfort. No tools and no jack are needed to make the change.
Is the RS999229 compatible with the Mercury Mountaineer?
Yes. The 1997 through 2001 Mercury Mountaineer shares its front suspension architecture with the Ford Explorer and is included in the RS999229 fitment chart. Both the V6 and V8 Base trim configurations are covered. The same installation procedure and hardware apply.
What is the difference between the RS9000XL triple-tube design and a standard twin-tube shock?
A standard twin-tube shock uses only a working tube and a reserve tube. Under heavy use, the fluid in a twin-tube design can aerate as gas and fluid mix, causing inconsistent damping. The RS9000XL triple-tube design used in the RS999229 adds a third tube that separates gas and fluid completely, preventing aeration and maintaining consistent damping force throughout extended use on long highway drives or repeated rough-road cycles.
What does the Rancho Limited Lifetime Warranty cover for the RS999229?
Rancho's Limited Lifetime Warranty covers the RS999229 against defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product to the original retail purchaser. The warranty is non-transferable and does not cover normal wear, damage from improper installation, abuse, racing, or use outside the product's intended application. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the full terms of this warranty must be made available to you before purchase. Contact Rancho directly or ask your retailer for the complete warranty documentation.
Does the RS999229 fit the Mazda B4000 through 2010?
Yes. The Mazda B4000 is built on the same platform as the Ford Ranger and shares compatible front suspension geometry through the 2010 model year. The SE and Dual Sport trims from 1998 through 2010 are included in the RS999229 fitment chart. The same mounting hardware and installation procedure apply as for the Ford Ranger application.
The RS999229 is covered by the Rancho Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship to the original purchaser. This warranty is non-transferable. In accordance with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the full warranty terms must be disclosed prior to purchase.
