Dual Black MAX Steering Stability for 1966-1986 Jeep CJ5 and CJ7 4WD Off-Road Builds

The Skyjacker 8200 is a Black MAX dual steering stabilizer kit purpose-built for classic Jeep CJ5, CJ7, Scrambler, CJ3, and Jeepster platforms. These iconic off-road Jeeps run solid front axles and exposed steering linkage that transfers every rock strike, rut, and bump directly into the steering wheel without adequate damping. The 8200 installs two Black MAX twin-tube cylinders in an inline configuration using dedicated mounting hardware to deliver the dual damping needed for confident, fatigue-free steering on old Jeeps running modern tire upgrades. All hardware is included for a complete bolt-on installation.

Key Features

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Skyjacker 8200?

The Skyjacker 8200 is a Black MAX dual steering stabilizer kit for 1966-1986 Jeep CJ5, CJ7, Jeepster, Scrambler, and CJ3 platforms. It installs two Black MAX twin-tube cylinders to control steering shimmy and front-end wandering on classic Jeep builds running larger tires and lift kits.

Does the Skyjacker 8200 fit the 1981-1985 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler?

Yes. The 1981-1985 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler is specifically listed in the 8200 fitment. The Scrambler shares the same front axle and steering geometry as the CJ7 of the same era.

Is the Skyjacker 8200 compatible with a CJ7 running 35-inch tires?

Yes. The 8200 is specifically designed to control the front-end shimmy that builds running 33-inch and larger tires on CJ platforms. The dual-cylinder setup provides substantially more damping force than any factory or single-cylinder replacement can offer.

Does the Skyjacker 8200 bolt on without modification to a stock CJ5?

Yes. The 8200 is a bolt-on kit using the CJ's front axle housing and tie rod as mounting points. All brackets and hardware are included. No cutting, welding, or drilling is required.

Will the Skyjacker 8200 fit a lifted CJ7 with an aftermarket front axle?

The 8200 uses the front axle housing and tie rod as its mounting base. Aftermarket axles that retain the same housing diameter and tie rod position as the factory Spicer 30 or Spicer 44 are generally compatible. Verify bracket clearance with your specific axle build before ordering.

How does the 8200 improve CJ steering feel on the highway?

Classic CJ Jeeps are notorious for loose, vibration-prone highway steering due to their solid front axles, long exposed tie rods, and minimal factory damping. The 8200 adds twin-cylinder inline damping that absorbs road surface inputs and tire imbalance vibration before it reaches the steering wheel, resulting in noticeably steadier highway tracking.

What is the difference between the Skyjacker 8200 and a single steering stabilizer replacement?

A single replacement provides one-for-one damping improvement over the factory unit. The 8200 dual kit provides twice the damping force by running two cylinders simultaneously, which is essential for CJs running large tires where a single cylinder is insufficient.

What warranty does the Skyjacker 8200 carry?

The 8200 is covered by Skyjacker's standard limited manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Contact Skyjacker Suspensions or your authorized dealer for specific warranty terms.

Installation Overview

  1. Chock the rear wheels, engage the parking brake, and center the steering wheel.
  2. Press greased hourglass bushings into both stabilizer cylinder body eyes.
  3. Mount the center axle bracket to the front axle housing using the supplied U-bolts. Snug but do not fully tighten.
  4. Install the passenger-side tie rod bracket on top of the tie rod with U-bolts. Repeat for driver side.
  5. Install washers and poly stem bushings on each stabilizer shaft end and connect to tie rod brackets. Tighten until bushings begin to swell.
  6. Extend each stabilizer to half travel. Torque center axle U-bolts to 30 ft-lbs and tie rod bracket U-bolts to 240 in-lbs.
  7. Cycle steering lock to lock. Confirm no binding and adequate clearance. After 100 miles, re-check all hardware torque.
