Single Connecting Rods — Individual Rod Replacements

Single connecting rods allow engine builders to replace an individual damaged rod without purchasing a full set, or to source a specific rod for a custom stroke or displacement build where off-the-shelf sets are not available. Single rods are also useful for race applications where one rod must be swapped between rounds without overhauling the entire engine.

Popular Upgrades

Individual H-beam 4340 chromoly connecting rods in LS, small-block Chevy, small-block Ford, and Honda K-series applications are the most common single-rod purchases for engine rebuilds after a failure. Custom-length connecting rods for stroker kits are often sourced as individual units to match a specific rod-to-stroke ratio when no off-the-shelf set provides the correct center-to-center length. Titanium single rods for LS and 2JZ race applications provide the lightest option available for reducing reciprocating mass at extreme RPM.

When would I need to buy just one connecting rod?

Single rod purchases are common after a spun bearing or connecting rod failure where only one cylinder suffered damage and the remaining rods are inspected and confirmed sound. A single replacement rod matched to the undamaged rods' weight and specification allows the engine to be rebuilt without discarding serviceable parts. Always have all rods in the engine weighed together before deciding which approach is most cost-effective.

Can I mix connecting rod brands in one engine?

Mixing brands is not recommended because different manufacturers machine their rods to slightly different weight specifications, which creates a rotating assembly imbalance. If replacing a single rod, match it to the same brand, model, and weight specification as the existing rods. A professional balancer can correct minor imbalances, but starting with matched hardware minimizes the correction needed.
