Engine control packs are pre-configured wiring harness and PCM combinations that allow a crate engine or swap engine to be started and operated without the complexity of adapting the donor vehicle's complete electrical system. Control packs are especially popular in LS and LT engine swaps where the goal is plug-and-play engine operation in a non-GM chassis or a vehicle originally equipped with a different engine family.

LT1 and LT4 control packs are increasingly popular as Gen V engine swaps gain traction in hot rod and restomod builds. What does an engine control pack include?

A complete engine control pack typically includes a pre-programmed ECM or PCM tuned for the specific engine, a standalone wiring harness with engine-side and transmission-side connectors, an accelerator pedal assembly, and any fuel pump and cooling fan control relays needed for standalone operation. The harness is engineered to eliminate all vehicle-specific circuits not needed to run the engine, making installation in a swap or scratch-built vehicle straightforward.

Do control packs require tuning after installation?

Most control packs come pre-configured for a stock or mildly modified version of the target engine and can be started without initial tuning. Modifications such as a larger camshaft, upgraded injectors, or a cold air intake may require a tune to achieve optimal idle quality and full-throttle performance. A control pack with a license for a tuning software platform allows the installer to make those adjustments without returning the unit to the manufacturer.
