Cooling Packages — Radiator, Fan & Shroud Combos
Cooling packages bundle radiators, fans, shrouds, coolant hoses, and thermostats into a single kit that addresses the complete cooling system rather than replacing one component at a time. Upgrading the cooling system as a coordinated package ensures all components are matched for flow rate, pressure rating, and connection size, delivering better temperature control than mixing individual components from different sources.
Popular Upgrades
Aluminum radiator, electric fan, and shroud combo packages are the most popular choice for engine swaps, restomod builds, and high-output street cars where the factory cooling system cannot manage the increased heat rejection of a modified engine. High-performance cooling packages for towing applications that include a heavy-duty radiator, transmission cooler, and upgraded fan assembly are the most practical solution for trucks and SUVs that regularly tow at or near maximum capacity. Radiator and cap packages with pressure-matched components prevent premature system pressurization that can cause hose failure on systems with significant power increases.
When does the entire cooling system need to be upgraded rather than just the radiator?
A full cooling package upgrade is the right approach when a power increase substantially raises heat rejection requirements, when an engine swap eliminates the factory cooling architecture, or when a vehicle operates in extreme conditions like towing in hot climates or sustained track driving. Upgrading only the radiator while leaving the stock fan and shroud in place limits the benefit, since the fan and shroud are responsible for airflow at low vehicle speeds where heat rejection demand is highest.
What size electric fan do I need for my cooling package?
A single electric fan in the 2,500 to 3,000 CFM range is sufficient for most street-driven V6 applications. V8 and turbocharged builds typically require a dual-fan or high-output single-fan setup in the 3,000 to 3,500 CFM range to maintain adequate airflow at idle and in stop-and-go traffic. The fan must also be matched to the radiator core dimensions to ensure full core coverage without gaps that reduce cooling efficiency.
