Crankshaft Dampers & Harmonic Balancers — SFI Rated

Crankshaft dampers, also called harmonic balancers, are the weighted pulley assembly at the front of the crankshaft that absorbs and dissipates torsional vibration created by combustion pulses. A failed or deteriorating damper allows crankshaft harmonics to build up, accelerating bearing wear and potentially causing catastrophic crankshaft damage in high-RPM or high-output engines.

Popular Upgrades

Performance underdrive harmonic dampers that reduce parasitic accessory drive load are popular on naturally aspirated racing engines where every horsepower counts. SFI-rated dampers meeting the Society of Fire Integrity 18.1 standard are required equipment at most sanctioned drag racing events and are recommended for any high-RPM performance build. Replacement OEM-spec dampers restore factory harmonic control on high-mileage street vehicles where the rubber bond in the original damper has failed or the outer ring has begun to walk forward on the hub.

How do I know if my crankshaft damper is failing?

The most visible sign of a failing damper is the outer ring shifting forward or rotating independently of the hub, visible as a step or misalignment at the damper face. A vibration felt at idle or a specific RPM range, squealing at the accessory belt, or an erratic ignition timing signal caused by the trigger tooth walking out of position are additional warning signs. Inspect the rubber bond at the junction of the hub and outer ring for cracking or separation during any timing belt or front-cover service.

Does a performance harmonic damper improve power?

Underdrive dampers reduce the rotational mass and drag of the accessory drive, returning a small amount of power to the rear wheels. On naturally aspirated engines, the gain is typically 3 to 8 horsepower depending on pulley diameter reduction. SFI-rated performance dampers also provide better torsional vibration absorption at extreme RPM compared to aging OEM units, which improves bearing life and ECU trigger signal quality.
