Detailing Clay Bars, Mitts & Towels for Paint Prep
Detailing clay removes bonded surface contaminants including industrial fallout, rail dust, brake dust, tree sap, and road tar that washing alone cannot lift from paint, glass, and wheels. Running your hand across a clean panel after washing — if it feels rough or gritty — is the reliable test for whether paint correction work needs to start with a clay bar before polishing or wax application.
Popular Upgrades
Traditional clay bars in fine, medium, and heavy grades are the most-used decontamination tools in professional and enthusiast detailing, with fine-grade clay appropriate for lightly contaminated paint on regularly maintained vehicles. Clay mitts and clay pads that attach to an orbital polisher are popular for speeding up the decontamination process on larger vehicles. Synthetic clay towels provide a faster alternative to traditional clay bars with a flatter contact surface that glides over panels more quickly with the same contaminant removal capability.
What lubricant should I use with detailing clay?
A dedicated clay lubricant spray or quick detailer diluted to a slippery consistency is required to prevent the clay from marring paint during use. Never clay a dry panel. Apply lubricant generously, clay with light pressure using back-and-forth motions rather than circular strokes, and re-lubricate frequently. A clay bar that drops on the ground should be discarded immediately as contamination picked up from the ground will scratch paint.
How often should I clay my paint?
For most daily-driven vehicles, claying once or twice per year before wax or paint protection film application is sufficient. Vehicles parked outdoors near industrial areas, rail lines, or coastal zones may benefit from more frequent claying due to higher contamination load. Always clay before polishing or coating to ensure the abrasives and bonding agents are working against clean paint surface rather than loose contamination.
