How do electric exhaust cutouts work?

Electric exhaust cutouts use a motorized valve installed in the exhaust pipe. When the valve is open, exhaust gases bypass the muffler for a louder, unrestricted sound. When closed, gases flow through the normal exhaust path for a quieter tone. Most kits include a wireless remote or dash-mounted switch.

Do exhaust cutouts affect performance?

When fully open, exhaust cutouts reduce back pressure and can provide modest horsepower gains, particularly at high RPM. The effect is most noticeable on naturally aspirated engines. For daily driving, running the cutout closed preserves normal exhaust velocity for mid-range torque.
